This is the best animated film I've ever seen. (is anything better?)

And in my top 5 all time. Truly a rare gem. I hope to see more like this.

I believe I've seen pretty much everything in the animated genre.
Please recommend other animated films you think are better than The Secret of Kells. There might be a winner I've missed.
(Don't bother mentioning "Avatar" which imo is a sad testament to the downward spiral of humanity. The bottom of the barrel in over priced drivel.)
Many 3D animated films weak, but some are good. My favorite 3D film would be Dragon Hunters http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0944834/.

The right state of mind is necessary to experience the full effect of The Secret of Kells. If one is distracted or disturbed, internally or externally, or over saturated with sensory stimulation, one can easily miss the full experience.
I watched it by myself, very early in the morning, in a clear zen state, and was completely absorbed and blown away. Sure it works for the kids or a party popcorn flick but it likely won't have the same depth and complexity under those circumstances.

the triplets of belleville is really good

The Iron Giant is my favorite animated film. It's not as artistically amazing as something like Kells, but the story, dialogue, characters, and emotion are perfect.

And I'm glad to see someone else has heard of Dragon Hunters. It's not one of my absolute favorites, but I do like it and it deserves to be better known.

Spirited Away.

Yes, Miyazaki films specially Princess Mononoke might be better than that. But I should confess this cartoon earns a 10/10 from me. Miyazaki is someone who cannot be rated. He is like the god of anime.

I stongly second (third?) the suggestion of Miyazaki. I especially adore Kaze no Tani no Naushika, but most of the other Studio Ghibli movies are great, too.
They have a style that's hugely different from tSoK, but share it's imagination, dreamliness, and richness in detail and colour.

Wow, I *just* saw this film (tSoK) and I'm still totally blown away, I guess I should give it some time to settle.

Another vote for Miyazaki (Totoro, Spirited Away) here.

BTW, the director of TSoK also loves Miyazaki, and "Totoro" is his favourite animated movie

I gave it a 10/10, but I've surely given a couple hundred animated films a 10. Obviously I like animation and the kinds of stories usually done with animation.

Dragon Hunters? Egad. Perhaps I should actually finish that movie. I found some of the characters so mind-numbingly irritating that I turned it off.

You'd feel cocky too if you were full of myself.

I think what makes this film so enjoyable is just how refreshing it is.

reply

i think this film is better than anything Disney (and especially Pixar) have ever done. but i wouldn't say it's the best...How to Train Your Dragon, Polar Express, and Waking Life get me going more than Kells. but it's a close race.

reply

Polar Express? better than anything pixar has done? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!!!!

Another vote for Spirited Away.

Another vote for Miyazaki, he is a genius. All of them are excellent, altho I like Ponyo the least I guess.
