Which came first?

I went to see this last night with a load of friends. I couldn't help but notice that it was very similar to 'Memoirs of a Geisha'

is this just coincidence? or are both stories based on a rather generic occurrence?

I enjoyed the film very much though it is slightly longer then the films i watch usually, i was just wondering if there was any connection
