Is this necessary?

I only have one disc of Season 2 left. Should I watch the movie afterward for full closure, or does the anime still hold up without it?

imo it holds up. but you like many other people may not like the ending of the series that much. (because it's not really an "ending") so yea watch this! it's a fantastic movie that continues off the show and maintains the feeling and everything of it. there's a real finality to conqueror of shamballa.

I thought the movie was utterly unnecessary, the ending in the original series was much much better handled. The movie plot is pretty crap and imo if you totally ignored the movie you'd be better off.

Personally, I think the film was very necessary. Edward was in another world, and Al wanted to find him. Also, Envy and Wrath's stories needed to be finished.
And finally, it had to deal with Roy. Some would say his big emo phase in the movie was OOC, but the series' ending for him was the real OOC situation. The guy had ruined himself by fulfilling his revenge, betraying his ideals, dreams, and the wishes of his best friend, with another innocent death on his conscience. This is the Roy who almost blew his brains out for killing an innocent couple (Winry's parents). Indeed, the sight of Roy right after Bradley's incineration- a face of pain and sorrow- is more symmetrical to the emo Roy we see in CoS. In a series where dark actions have consequences, to have Roy be 'Oh well' and happy with Riza after what he did is ridiculous! Fortunately, the movie resolves that error, implying that Roy's happy scene was either another poker-face front (like when he shocked Schieszka with his 'indifference' about Hughes' death) or a reprieve that was inevitably temporary.
