Confused

So I get he made up rachel and everything to get mark to like him and have a new friend but why did he take it as far as all the terrorist and government stuff and getting him to almost kill him!? What did that serve? He knew it would make a good story? And how did not even one of them essp John not end up in at least a mental institution?
