What a Shocking Title!

That's got to be one of the worst titles I've heard in a long time.

The film looks good though.

Damn. Shame...

I know... But I've warmed up to it and honestly, I can't think of another title.

Look, I know the title sucks, but in the UK, Puffball and its author Fay Weldon are well known. As of date, there are no plans to change that title, if only because it is familiar to quite a few, or so I am told. But trust me, I'm with you and I do agree that it is an awful title. Unfortunately, I can't think of anything better (and I worked on the film).

By the way, I think your list is pretty funny since exasperated producers started calling the film 'Puff-bollocks' during pre-production!

It sounds intriguing to me.

And I don't mind if the title is box office poison. That means fewer kids at the movie theatre, throwing popcorn all over themselves.

Obviously, the title has since been changed, but the original title of the book came from the fact that the puffball fungus made Liffey (in the book) think of a pregnant belly. The same fungus is still found throughout the movie as it does grow until the fungus matures (round like a belly) and bursts expelling its spores.

The new title, The Devil's Eyeball, refers to the dish a character makes that resembles the puffball. I have not found it online with a quick search, but will ask someone I know who is Irish if they know what it is. More information would be a "spoiler" anyway.

Here's a link to an article from the New York Times about the book (contains spoilers, although it is different in many ways from the movie): http://www.nytimes.com/books/98/10/25/specials/weldon-puffball.html?_r =1&oref=slogin

Also, a link to the book with one review which indicates that the book was humorous: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0007109245/ref=cm_cr_dp_orig_subj

You think this is even more silly as a title than Quantum of Solace?

reply

I didn't start the thread. No one is discussing Quantum of Solace.

No, the OP was discussing silly titles and I thought I was replying to him. Happy now?

I agree, bogwart - but what about "71 fragments of a chronology of chance" for a godawful title?

I got it,I got it,I got it...I ain`t got it

You're absolutely right. That's worse than 'Puffball' and 'A Complete History of My Sexual Failures' put together.

I'd never heard of that. Must look out for it, despite the title, because I like Michael Haneke, the freaky bastard. :)

HEY! I rather like the title :P
I just wish the movie was actually about something else lol

Several people I tried to praise "Pumpkinhead" to were put off by the title. But the proof is in the pudding~rather, watching the film. Now, all of them are fans of that movie.

I wasn't put off by the title, as "Puffball" reminds me of the sometimes-massive fungus that one comes across in the timbers around here. We were taught never to puncture one, in the belief that it could cause breathing ailments. I'm not certain if there's truth to that, but it stopped us from stomping smaller ones and going anywhere near the ones as large as they show near the start of this film.

Never judge a book by a cover or a film by its title.

I'm just thrilled to have heard an O'Carolan melody, and I just might tape it if only for the music. I'm pleased that it's on Starz On Demand (a free service) for a while, giving me many times to view it.

yeah, but it's just a kids movie, right? My 5 year old son really loves it. I havent seen it but he watches it over and over. Donald Sutherland wouldnt be in an inappropriate film. I think its a good title for a kids movie.
