Imus

With the recent firing of Imus for what he stated about the Rutgers basketball team, do people like Carlin, Leary and others have to watch their mouths now, for fear of having Al Sharpton up their ass?

reply

No. Carlin has talked about race repeatedly and even in the context of a joke called Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor *beep*

I believe the joke was something like "Its about the context, words mean absolutely nothing, in and of themselves. You take the word *beep* there is nothing wrong with the word *beep* Its the racist *beep* who is using it that you ought to be concerned about. We don't get mad when Richard pryor or Eddie Murphy say it cuz we not know they aren't racist....They're *beep*

He has also repeatedly mentioned how he feels that blacks have been repeatedly *beep* over by this country.

Imus' biggest crime (perhaps other than presenting mostly mediocre meaningless drivel wrapped up in emotionalism) was playing to the general masses. Usually in the general public venue it's o.k. to be off color or even mean and racist but you have to pick your scapegoats carefully, make sure they're the popular model of the day to persecute. For example you can say the nastiest sh+t about Hispanics as long as you hide your hatred under the guise of patriotism and "immigration". Clearly Muslim bashing is still quite hip, even among those who claim to be liberals.

I don't particularly care about Imus one way or the other and never found anything he said to be interesting enough to remember (other than perhaps his pathetic groveling apology). But even if he were the most offensive jerk in the world I would defend his right to be an offensive jerk. If you don't defend your enemies right to speak than you will one day find your thoughts and words to be the deemed the voice of the enemy. That is, of course, if you're not a completely irrelevant mass of space and have something even semi-thoughtful to say. But quite frankly I am not the least bit surprised by what happened to Imus. Nor should any of us be surprised when things keep getting worse, as there has been virtually nothing happening politically, legally or socially to indicate that we will have nothing other than more and more of the same old idiotic sh+t taking place.

All the more reason to enjoy this great work by Carlin and laugh at our otherwise sad condition.
