Legend of the Seeker - which source material 1st used the 'seeker' term?

Just curious -- which source material first called its protagonist the "seeker"? The novel on which this movie is based, or the novels on which the "Legend of the Seeker" TV show is based?

The Dark is Rising came first. The first book came out in 1965. The Sword of Truth series started in 1994.
