what was the meaning of the black general?

huh?

reply

My thoughts exactly. Gave the movie a three because of it.

What are you talking about?
Michael Clark Duncan is the actor present in both movies but he certainly isn't a black general in "The Green Mile".
So calling an, IMHO, excellent movie ridiculous for something that it didn't contain is terribly unfair.
Try watching it and see for yourself.

Ah.. I see what you mean.

The director must have chosen MCD because he liked him and most people like him because of his performance in the Green Mile.
There are still huge differences between the characters though.
One is a big baby who can perform miracles while the other one is a vengeful manifestation of a rape victim's imagination.

This movie really isn't that deep. He was just used to make the story progress, for instance, in the scene in court when they discredit the rape in the opening scene to say she is crazy. Then they use him again to explain why she goes nuts and kills the rapist, by saying he convinced her to stop taking the pills. The only reason there is a black general is to escape having to come up with better ways to progress the storyline. They couldn't just erase his character or it would be too weird, as if it wasn't weird enough.

I was sexually assaulted in college in our fraternity house back in 1989. I wish I'd had a big, black general. I bet lots of women wish they did.

To give her the courage to survive after being raped.

Seriously, you need to understand and study more relevant psychological papers to get the idea of such imaginary figure is this film from a victim's POV. Without the general, she already killed herself at first abuse at 15.

Only one person in this thread came up with a reasonable interpretation of the black general. : /

Yes, he could be a 'saviour' figure that women who are raped envision in their minds to even slightly alleviate their feelings of helplessness and pain while being attacked.

The general could also symbolize 'revenge' or 'justice'.

He represents the ultimate bad@ss. He isn't someone you should mess with, ever. That's right, you cross the line and he will come to your house and mess you up so bad, you can't even begin to imagine. You will piss yourself at the very thought of it!! Because if he is coming for you, that's it. Game over man. Game over! He is a former or current member of the military. Maybe marines or special forces.

We're mad at Mike. Do you know who we're mad at? Mike? You dang right!

Could this also somehow parallel the restoration of justice, including in cases of injustice such as racism, like a symbol of black slaves successfully managing to revolt against their white opressors and in this case, women revolting against evil men that sexually mistreated them?

The greatest trick the Devil has ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist!
