is this scenario even slightly possible?

Although I respect Henning Mankell's works (he is a fine author, imo) isn't this scenario just a little bit far-fetched?

Several computers all over the world with some kind of script that sends an attack (DoS attack?)that wipes out all bank accounts and information about peoples saved money when the computers, this kind of information is stored on, gets attacked and goes down?
