Highly Recommended!!!

I saw this one yesterday at the Fantastic Fest in Austin and I was pleasantly surprised since we decided to see as an afterthought to kill time. It was GREAT! While imdb likens it to Day of the Dead and Alien and some of the thematic elements are the same, The Cold Hour treats "survivalist horror" in a unique way from the perspectives of several different characters: young children, a jealous jilted lover who is more worried about his ex-lover's current relationship than the events outside, the group's matriach, and even an adolescent girl's cruse on a gay man. All these things aside, the film is extremely atmospheric and the creatures are very nightmarish. While some viewers might be disappointed by the lack of explanation of the characters' plight (confusion which is shared by the children, who are shielded from the truth by the adults for their own protection), the final moments are breathtaking and I had shivers up and down my spine. With Asian horror cinema continuing to disappoint me with continuous female ghosts with long hair hanging in their faces, I am warming up to what Spanish filmmakers are doing, especially with things like Pan's Labyrinth. The Cold Hour was far better than the festival's opening screening of Diary of the Dead; please go see it if you enjoy films like this, and if you're reading this I'm sure you do!
