I was a little disappointed.

As a big fan of Shutter, this was kind of a let down. Not a terrible film by any means (it's well made, shot, scored, acted, etc.), but the scares just weren't there, it became too repetitive and the big twist wasn't all that great either.

I agree.

I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together.

I sadly would have to agree with CAPKRONOS. I mean after watching Shutter I kind of figured out half way through the movie that there was going to be a twist just like Shutter the person that you feel bad for ends up deserving it in the end. Still I like their work and Shutter right now is on the top of my list as a pretty scary movie.

I notice that everybody who finds Alone to be disappointing in any way always mentions "Shutter".

That's the problem with you Americans (and Americanised non-fatties) - you have to compare everything.

I have not seen Shutter. I did not watch Alone because it was made by the same people. Therefore, I'm not expecting it to surpass Shutter.

I'm trying to understand what goes through your mind when you watch a movie.
"OH YEAH THESE GUYS MADE SHUTTER SO THIS MOVIE'S GOT TO BE BETTER AS IT WAS MADE AFTER!!... IT'S NOT AS SCARY AS SHUTTER I'M SO DISAPPONTED! 2/10!"

I really can't imagine being so narrow-minded.

Now, because of you people, I have no desire to EVER watch Shutter.
Not only because it sounds incredibly tedious, but because its fanbase seems to be comprised of braindead dregs - the kind of people who enjoy movies such as The Matrix.

You can't see the big picture with such a small screen.

Yes, since ALL Americans think the same right? All people with different opinions than you must be Americanised right? Way to generalise. Funny how you cannot imagine being so narrow minded with your statement above. :)

Anyway, Alone is a great movie and Shutter is great but totally different, in my book. I liked the ending of Shutter better although in Alone I loved the story more.

I haven't seen the original Shutter (Haven't found it on DVD in my neck of the woods), just the crappy Hollywood remake. So I cannot say how much of a letdown is "Alone" but certainly this is far from being amongst the best asian horror flicks. It's plain mediocre.
Its main fault is that it is too PREDICTABLE. Halfway through the movie you already guessed that Pim is Ploy.

Why did you have to give away the ending without a warning?

I, for one, really enjoyed the scares. Like the "Scream scare" another poster mentioned and another when "Pim" was lying in bed. Distorted faces creep me out, what can I say? :-) The entire first half was really strong (scares, childhood backstory was touching, etc). Very similar to Shutter (basic in terms of story/plot but executed to perfection).

That said, I was a little disappointed with the twist - I don't feel it was needed. Turned the movie from an effective horror into just another psycho thriller. If they'd kept Pim as the good hearted but guilt-stricken victim, and kept Ploy as the vengeful outsider with a vicious streak (and now more powerful as a ghost), as you're lead to view them as initially, I feel it would have been a stronger film. Or at least creepier all the way through.

I couldn't help but think "haven't I seen this twist before?" Can't place it, but it felt very familiar (twin living out the life of the other who is deceased). It seems every horror feels the need to add a twist these days. I know Shutter had one, but in that case it worked incredibly. The ending of this just felt..."Hollywood" to me (complete with burning house). So yeah, I think Alone would have stood out more if it just focused on being a creepy as hell horror without a big twist.

Still, I enjoyed it and think its a worthy follow-up to Shutter. I wish these Asian horrors would come to DVD in America quicker though, so I wouldn't have to lose patience and scour the net to buy them sight unseen. It was the same with Shutter. Looking forward to more from these directors.

I think, in fact, that it would have worked better alright if it turned out that the woman WAS having mental disorders and it was all in her mind -- it would have been a far more shocking, unexpected and thought-provoking conclusion than what we got here. I think that today's horror films have got this trend of trying to become more "realistic", with documentary-like "1st person" recordings and so on, but rarely do we get the chance to see something scary that ACTUALLY happens to people in real life, and that we rarely stop to think about.

As for the twist, it's absolutely overdone. I read a Simpsons fanfic written 10 years ago that had the exact same twist, by golly!

Um, the newest movies that follow the trend of 1st person that I can think of is Paranormal Activity. You want to see a movie that shows that the ghosts were all in their head?

SPOILERS FOR ANOTHER FILMS

Then watch "A Tale of Two Sisters" or its american remake, "The Uninvited."
