Cheats

Looking online I found alot of cheats codes but i don't understand what the start button is, for example:To get to level 99 you have to type in in the extraction menu- up, down, up,down, left, up, left, right, start so what is start. I think it is the escape key, but i am not sure, so if you know can you please help me.
