terrible documentary

actually this movie sucks and just because you like saddle-creek bands doesn't mean this lame crap is a good movie. stupid hipsters make me crazy!

My copy of the dvd is coming in a few weeks time, so since I am yet to see it, I have no argument here. I was just wondering as to why you think the film "sucks"? You didn't mention what sucked about it.

reply

check out my review for details as to why this sucks so hard.

Why the *beep* is Conor Oberst credited as Bright Eyes?

Cover me, Porkins!

reply

Conor Oberst is Bright Eyes-the musicians he plays with rotate for the most part and by and large don't matter. He writes the songs, he wears the sweaters.

reply

Actually, as Conor has stated in interviews, Bright Eyes is, in fact, a band name because Mike Mogis is also a permanent member of the band. Whether or not he "matters" is irrelevent. He plays a variety of instruments, is present at all tours and on all albusms, and produces most of Bright Eyes' records. I'd say that is a band member.

if you don't know the answer to that question you obviously didnt watch the movie

i read your review, and i still don't understand why you hate it so much. it said it's about Saddle Creek not the genre. As far as i'm concerned it's exactly what it says it's about. It's not an evening with Conner Oberst, and he's not the only one people care about. i think you were expecting way to much.

reply

Yeah I thought it was bad. I ordered it online and everything, and it definitely was not worth the 25 bucks.

In the last half hr where they try to sum up the remaining bands, I felt like they knew they were running out of space on a tape so they blurted out everything as simply as possible just to get it in. There were so many ways it could have been approached to make it much better. I'm sure something good will be made some day. ;)

The documentary was exactly what the title says, "Spend an Evening with Saddle Creek". I don't really know what you were expecting. It's a very good history of how the label came to be and how it has progressed to today.

If someone is honestly interested in Saddle Creek records, then this is the movie to get. If you aren't interested in the label, then of course you aren't going to like it and think it "sucks". It's like me watching a documentary on, say, 50 Cent or Tammy Wynette; If I dislike the music and the people, then of course I'm going to hate the documentary.

I enjoyed it. I thought it was neat to see the web between the musicians and it had a lot of little bonus performances which were really old and intimate. I know that Youtube has killed the "intimate" moment, so it may no longer mean as much, but I digress.

reply

I didn't think that it was great, but I'd rather have this than nothing. It's nice to have a history of the label with all the important people talking (not just Conor.)
