Did Aerith know?.. (SPOILERS)

That Zack died?
I mean..

See how she reacted, at the end of her scene?
And then it switches to Zack's body?

That would lead me to believe so.
But I don't think they mentioned that in the game, that she knew.
And in the short-story, the Maiden who travels the Planet, she didn't know he had died, until she saw him, in the Lifestream.
I know it's not an official novel, by Square Enix, but I heard that Tetsuya Nomura made it seem like that it was a product of theirs.

No, she never knew. In Final Fantasy VII, Aerith tells Cloud that she never heard from him again...that "maybe he found someone else", and that she heard he was missing. But DEAD? No, she never knew.

As for the ending to Crisis Core, we all know Aerith's powers as an Ancient. She can FEEL when things happen. Right there, the Planet was telling her that someone dear to her has passed on. She just never knew who, but for some reason...she felt really sad.

Well, Aerith for sure did know about Zack's passing when they meet in the afterlife in Advent Children xD

Good gurls are just bad gurls that haven't been caught.

I think that Aerith did know of Zack's passing. The cinematic in CC showed that she had indeed felt his death. In this context, her behaviour in the original game indicates that, though she did know that Zack had died, she was far from ready to deal with it. She'd been waiting for him to return for so long, I think the knowledge that he was dead hurt her too much and it was 'easier' for her to tell herself that he'd left her instead. I think that she was finally ready to accept the truth of Zack's passing by the time Cloud and co. were in the Golden Saucer.

"Maiden" was not an official novel. It had been commissioned by the publisher of the Ultimania Omega, not by Square-Enix. It was never used as a reference or even mentioned by any of the official guidebooks and information. And even if we do allow ourselves to think that it may have been official, it's been superceded now by the new novellas.
