I'm only halfway through the series, so I'm not sure if it's explained at all in later episodes, but is there something biologically that makes them keep following Diva/Saya, or are they just loyal out of a strong sense of duty?

I think you will start to see varying ways the different chevaliers define their loyalty to Diva as the show progresses. I think with Hagi it is evident that it is love & the companionship he shares with saya through the ages. I don't want to spoil it but it is one of the best things about the show, seeing Divas chevaliers and understanding how they came to be and how their loyalties & love for her vary (motives, desires etc).
