Original vs Remake? (spoilers, perhaps?)

Wondering what the differences are between the remake and the original (I haven't seen it yet). Is the story all that much different, are the characters different, etc?

Thanks in advance.

Well, I never saw the remake and I wouldn't bother watching it, but almost everyone says the original is way better. I saw the trailer of the US remake and I have to say that it sucked ... big time. 2-5 years after a great Asian movie is done, some small minded guy from the US tries to copy it, which is quite ignorant. I think it's a slap in the original creators face.

I mean, most of the time a remake doesn't come close to the original, and why would it? According to the trailer it's some work of some lazy guy who doesn't want to come up with anything of his own. Usually, I'm not being too harsh about stuff like that, but it's really annoying and I don't see the point of it.

Maybe it's because people from the US are not used to subtitles or dubbed voices, I don't know about that since I'm from Austria.

If you can be bothered to read the subtitles, go with the original version, it's better.

They're both fun but the atmosphere is a lot better in the first one, and it's scarier. It actually made me jump. The remake didn't make me jump. But of course I knew the story so I was expecting almost everything. I'm glad I watched the original first.

It's not a great film but it's alright. The remake is just mediocre.

I think everyone else covered what the main differences were so I'm just adding my vote for watching the original first. Kind of obvious answer really though, as it's usually the case isn't it..

Enjoy :)

The biggest difference between the two versions is that the focus changes from the wife in the remake to the husband in the original. The murders/suicides of his friends all involved them jumping out of windows (so much for originality). The ghost is more Grudgelike then anything in the original (massive need of a scrunchie). And Megumi is gangbanged in the hall in full view of the camera while in the remake all we hear is her screaming.

I seen remake first, I thought it's mediocre and not scary sadly. Later I watched original -it was more intresting, had more suspense, characters were more believable, and it was alittle scary at parts-but I think it's because I saw remake so I new the story, anyway original has some good scares, and I really liked lead character. So to say I rated remake 5, and original 8. Maybe if I seen original before remake it's rating would be higher

Original: set in Thailand

Remake: Set in America/Japan

Just the cultural differences in the way the story is presented make them both worth watching. The original is better, but the remake did change some things up.
