Realistic?

Are we supposed to believe that police departments in real life operate this way? Ever? Often? Once in a while? With frequency? Anyone want to weigh in on this? Anyone who has actually worked in law enforcement? Is this fantasy or reality?

uh, do you ever read newspapers or watch the news?

And those are random googles for backwoods states like Oklahoma and Virginia, not some fast lane major metropolitan area. Just imagine New York, Miami, and LA where the dope hits the dirt. Never mind, don't imagine, just pick up a newspaper.

Yes, as a matter of fact, I read the paper all the time. I live in Minneapolis. I happen to live right across the street from a police officer. I can tell you that our city has it's fair share of crime, drugs, gangs and a number of murders as well. However, what I don't read about is mass corruption on the police force. I don't read about police lining their pockets illegally because their not being paid enough. I don't read about the police randomly murdering anyone they please. I don't read about police going into convenience stores and just helping themselves to the cash register (robbing them, folks?) I don't read about police controlling the drug dealing in the city. I can't say that any of these things have never happened here. However, I checked the StarTribune today, could not find any of these kinds of articles having run even recently, and we have a lot more murders than many cities.

So, yeah, once again, I do read the paper.

Just as an FYI, although I don't know why I need to bother, It's only one of MANY papers I read each day. Many papers are biased, so if you want to really know what's going on, it seems these day you need to read several.

Is this stuff commonplace? Well, no.

Does it happen on rare occasion? Sure, it does. Enough so that making a movie about it isnt too much of a stretch. I mean, come on, we have movies like Transformers and Skyline that get made.

I remember it happening in LA, and many years ago, worse things happened where I live in Boston. Also, in New Orleans, the police used to do terrible things. I don't think it's common though.

Think of it this way - not every city, not all the time, but it most definitely occurs on some level, in some way. Best current example? Chicago trials that were recently concluded - on trial were members of the the Special Operations Section, a unit that was disbanded due to corruption and abuse of power, among other things. The stuff they were accused of? Yeah, straight outta Pride and Glory.

I'd also ask macgirl66 what she would do if faced a a similar situation with the police. Would you call the cops? lol...

Fact is, people who are committing victimless crimes (like smoking cannabis) or illegal aliens as well as vast stretches of minority communities are far more open to abuse and police corruption and have very little they can do about it.

Its very realistic. I have the blu ray and there's an hour long documentary of the making of the film. Its very good, the best "making of" ive seen. No only were there realcops on scene but the movie even has real /retired nypd cops in the movie. For a good documentary about the NYPD in the 80's... I suggest watching The Seven Nine
