cops make 65 grand...

a year? do they really? just curious.

reply

Depending on location, not to sure about NYPD.
I know NYPD are one of the lowest paid though, that is why a lot of them go up to Middleton.
I doubt a beat cop would make that much in NYPD though.

reply

65k is right with over time.

reply

and in NYC 65K is crap.........

reply

why would a NYC cop make LESS?? i know plenty of cops that make over 100 grand, and if i was a cop i wouldn't work for less with all the *beep* they put up with.

reply

Yeah, but they retire in only 20 years, with full benefits until they die. - plus they get something like 50% of their pay as retirement pension.

You know how much that adds up to?

The bennies alone are worth maybe $20,000 a year. (more if you have a family) Image you're a cop & retire at 41, live until 91. That's 3 million paid to you after retirement, for 20 years work.

-and with actual pay, that's a grand total of $215,00 per year worked.

Where do I sign up?

A man year is 2080 hours of straight time....that'd only be $31.25 an hour and you can bet that 65K figure includes a ton of O.T. so that hourly rate is much lower.....an ELECTRICIAN makes $40, and nobody shoots at him, go ahead sign up tough guy...you won't last a month!!! LMFFAO!!!! Have faith you wont be at McDonalds forever!!!!

Did you not read the post you replied to? BENEFITS AND PENSION. The math isn't necessary, but it pushes the point home. It's the job that will keep on paying up until the day you die. It works out well in the end. Ask a retired cop any day, the majority won't complain much, I can guarantee it.

EVERYTHING WAS BEAUTIFUL AND NOTHING HURT.

This is kinda funny. Being an electrician is probably a more dangerous job than being a police officer. In some years, police officers are more likely to die on the job in a non-malicious car accident than someone shooting/stabbing/beating them. Their biggest threat when it comes to taking a bullet is themselves. A lot of cops die by suicide.

What cops get retirement at 20 years? You're thinking of the military.

In Boston, the average policeman makes more than 100K. Also, they get 80% of there top salary for the rest of their life. And yes, they can retire after not that many years. Maybe Boston is the exception.

Way overpaid IMO.

Average life expectancy of police is at least ten years less than a non*police male. And if you account things like stress, injuries, family problems and lack of sleep. Then the pay isn't unreasonable.

Also the police have a very high turnover rate. So only the most dedicated cops who can stick it 20 years will get the rewards.

But all those retired cop sitting on their bum is lame. They should really have a seniority pay system. Every additional year in the police force should get you $1500 more. So in 20 years you'd be making over $100 000 and be willing to stay on the job.

Since cops have a lower life expectancy it makes sense that they should have a lower retirement age. Don't understand why they keep on getting paid so much while not working. Must be the power of the unions and the money involved in the prison system of the U.S. Can't make money if noones catching criminals.

Overpaid? Really?? ..... you know who is over paid? Athletes. They are overpaid. Not cops.

65k according to the movie plus benefits and they still complain and take kickbacks.

Its that man again!!

I don't understand how some people think that 65 grand is a gross exaggeration . With the overtime , it adds up . I know In Mass. cops, firefighters and CO's can retire after 20 with full bennys . I know guys who work as meat cutters for grocery stores who have been a meat cutter for 5-6 years who make 65 grand or more a year . Most people don't believe when I tell them that the meat department manager gets between 102,000 and 112,000 a year with all the bonuses , They get between 12, and 14 thousand for a christmas bonus . 6 grand for March bonus , 2 weeks pay for June bonus and a week's pay for Sept. bonus . Along with 5 to 7-8 thousand put into profit sharing every year with no employee contributions , all from the company . The store manager gets around 200,000 a year or more . Store manager gets between 20-24,000 for a Christmas bonus . So the next time you are grocery shopping , don't think the guys working there are low class morons who have wasted there lives . But my company is probably the top of the food chain for grocery store in my region of the US . I cashed out my profit sharing after 6 and a half years and took home 30,268 . . . after my first 6 1/2 years !!! nothing came out of my paychecks to contribute to profit sharing . tell me some other job like that , that you can get with zero experience or schooling and after 6 years have 38,480 in your profit sharing before deductions for cashing out early ! 65 grand a year only seems like a lot if you are in a bottom level job , but trust me when you start making 50,000 and up, your spending habits go up and all the money just goes towards getting a good car and a better home and a couple of extras in life . that's all you get for 65 grand . you aren't rich even though to poor people it sounds like you're rich .

In the movie "King of New York" which takes place in 1989/1990 the cops in a bar scene whine about their meager $38K/year salary while the drug dealers they try to stop make ten times that, tax free too. That was 18/19 years before this movie was released so I find it interesting that the salary doubled.
