Scotland??????

Why did they film any of the film up here?? The scene when Potter and Heelis are leavng the auction i think it is, or the town meeting, is Obviously Loch Lomand with the Ben in the background, Why would they put that in and pretend it is the Lakes? I mean the Lake District is Beautiful, as is Loch Lomand of course, but they are both so distinctive why have Lomand in a film in the Lake District. if anyone has heared any reasoning behind this desition i would be greatful

I would have a signature but I don't know what to put

It's nothing to do with the beauty of the Lake District. It was all about getting access to film and the Lake District is a major tourist attraction.

reply

Aye, but they had plenty of shots of the Lake District why not use one of them? for the scenes. The scene with the Ben in the background is only a few seconds and you can tell imediatly where it is, so there is no way it can be passed off as the Lake, it's. The Ben has a very distince profile, it would be like puting a background of Londons CBD in a film set in Glasgow, obviously not real

I have a book called The Making Of Miss Potter by Garth Pearce. In there, it says that they filmed a lot on the Isle of Man (in addition to Scotland and the Lake District), the reason being finance. "In reality, for example, Beatrix was in North Wales, not in the Lake District, when she heard of . . . but for both practical and artistic reasons it made sense to film the scene in the Lakes." "But, for the most part, Potter devotees will embrace both the sense of atmosphere and authenticity in the film version of her life." So without a doubt the answer to your question as to why they filmed in Scotland is cost.

Whatever the case, I love the film, wherever they filmed it. The scenery is breathtaking. Of course, I live in the US, and I've never visited Scotland or the Lake District, so I wouldn't recognize the landscape . . .

The Dude abides.

Do you know if that is Scotland or the Lake District or the Isle of Man?!

Another film that was shot on the Isle of Man was "Keeping Mum" with Rowan Atkinson, Maggie Smith, and uh... Patrick Swayze. It was excellent!

They also talk in the special features about not being able to film at Hill Top due to it being a big tourist attraction. I hadn't realized, as I live in the US, that most of the scenes of the "Lake District" was shot in Scotland. I was actually very interested in showing this film to my sister as she went to college in the lake district and I thought she'd recognize some of the scenery. Let me just say, it is some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen, no matter where they shot it!

reply

Agreed, it looked like the Promised Land, wherever it was!

It must have been so much easier to film round Loch Lomond because they have no tourists whatsoever there and Ben Lomond is not the most climbed 'Munro' in the country (that's hills over 3000 feet that appear in Sir Hugh Munro's tables).

reply

I think they went to Loch Lomond just to give Renee Zelwegger a chance to eat a haggis.
either that, or they wanted to see Nessie and got their lochs in a twist.

Going a little OT but on filming locations...

one of the scenes looked like they were in The Pump Room (of Bath, England). I just recently came back from a trip and got all excited thinking, 'hey I was there!'... but it's not listed in the IMDB credits.

Anyone know if there was a shot in Bath's Pump Room?

"They're all mistakes, children. Glad I never was one."

reply

A lot of it was filmed in the Isle of Man due to funding. I guess many viwers will not notice it is not the lakes.

It's that man again!!
