rip-off of finding neverland?

is it just me or does this seem like a huge rip-off of finding neverland? i mean the whole british author writing a big imaginitive children's story with little scenes of the story being kind of real and an unaproved-of romance- doesnt that sound a bit familiar? i still think it'll be a good movie, but i just think that we've already seen it.

The film has been in development since the 1990's, long before Finding Neverland. http://www.emanuellevy.com/article.php?articleID=3718
And it's based on a true story, so it can't be a rip off - Beatrix Potter and James Barrie aren't the same person.

The animation in Miss Potter is nothing like the CGI in Finding Neverland, and the course of the love story is very different, apart from the way it ends.

i didnt mean they were exactly the same-i just meant that thry seemed very similar. sorry, i didnt know that miss potter was being created in the 90's. also i obviously know that barrie and potter are two different people. and they both are true stories (even though finding neverland was very loosly based on truth-i dont know about miss potter.)what i meant was that the idea of the films was very similar kind of like how (please exuse the immaturity of this example-i have a little sister and it was the only one i could think of) grease and high school musical are the same idea. (if you have never seen them theyre both about a girl and a boy who meet and fall in love outside of school andthen the girl moves to his town and joins his school but their friends get mad because they are from different social groups and they of coarse end up together in the end.) they also have differences, but literally everyone i have met that has seen them both agree that the writers of high school musical must have been influenced by greace, or else its a huge coincidence. also, i am aware that the cgi and animation are different, but anyone could tell that the concept is the same: it is a tool to take the viewer into the mind of the auther and give color to the film. same thing with the romance, every romance is going to be different but in the end it is what it is:a romance. both of the love stories seem to be, again, the same concept: girl loves boy, boy loves girl, families dont aprove. that initself is a rip off of romeo and juliet, which, as it turns out, is a rip off of an italian poem. different themes and patterns are used throughout several different films and stories, and most of them are "rip-offs." and when i say rip-off it sounds ruffer than it should, i just mean that it was probably greatly influenced by it. but i just wrote pretty much a whole paragraph on something that has already been disproven by the first reply, so i know im wrong. im just trying to explain the thought process behind my first post. sorry to upset/offend you.

I know what you are trying to say! It would have been safer to remark on the similarities, rather than to accuse the makers of Miss Potter of a rip-off!

fine, whatever. i don't post on imdb that much and i'll probably keep it that way after this. when your posting stuff to people all over the world, i guess your bound to get a lot of people disagreeing with you.

reply

Sir or Ma'am, I understand what you mean, but don't get some people disagreeing with you all flustered. Not everybody is going to share the same views as you. I thought the idea of doing this was a rip-off also, until I heard it had been in development since the 90's, but now I think the main reason it got made now was because of the sucess Finding Neverland.

I don't know why you're upset. The other posters were polite. They just were pointing out the differences between this project and FN. And added some information you obviously weren't aware of.

Don't expect that everyone will agree with you here at IMDb. And if you starts threads with rip-off in the title without knowing your facts you are bound to get a response that you will have difficulty arguing against.

Death was a common occurrence in those days, so both movies dealt with sickness and death.
Otherwise, they were about highly successful British writers, and they were true stories.

Maybe you have already seen it. The story of Beatrix Potter was shown on
Masterpiece Theater about 20 years ago; that version, unfortunately not on DVD,
was superior to this movie.

After reading the synopsis, Finding Neverland was the first thing I thought of. That's not a negative thing I don't think. "Ripoff" is not a good word, as both are based on an authur of a lovable children's story.

i don't know if anyone will read this since a posted this a while ago, but i just checked back. sorry if i sounded really mad, because i definatly wasnt. i think that thats another problem with imdb, is that you never really know how people are saying things. thats why i thought the other posters were mad i guess, because i just thought that they were saying things in a certain way. and i always knew that people would disagree on imdb, but at first i was just suprised that they disagreed with my post because i thought what i said was an obvious thing at first. but now i know other people's opinions and you've changed my mind, though i do still think the ideas are very similar. sorry for all of the trouble this caused!

p.s. not that it was really trouble...sorry i dont know what to say. im so self- conciece of upseting people. (and not because of this post, just in general.)

My dear Lucy, all is forgiven, I'm sure!!

And I absolutely understand what you're saying about being conscious of upsetting people. These boards are a mine for misunderstandings...

I am 13 now and was a fan of the books. Even now I am eager to see Miss Potter. I think the animations they used with the animals etc were fantastic! I think Renee is a fantastic Beutrix Potter.

Another film probably somewhat similar to this and Finding Neverland is Dreamchild (1985). It's about Lewis Carroll and his relationship to the real life Alice. In some of the scenes characters from Alice in Wonderland are performed by Jim Henson's puppets (but not the Muppets, more like Dark Crystal/Labyrinth). I really like but think it's quite hard to find a copy of.

They are both telling the stories of real people. How could either be a rip-off? It's like saying one president is a rip-off of another because they were both presidents.

reply

This idea has been used a number of times. The movie that I think of as inspiration for both Finding Neverland and Miss Potter is Shakespeare in Love.

reply

I dont think so, and as an author myself I can say that authors do have big imaginations and movies such as these just exajerate it a bit, it had the same feel to it though. And when ISNT there forribin love? I might as well say Finding Neverland is just a rip off of Romeo and Juliette. But you never know, you may be right, however in my opinion you are not.

reply

You know, I never really realized how similar both movies were till I read this post. Come to think of it, they're VERY similar. But I wouldn't call it a rip off, per se. I mean, you make a movie about a children's author, you want to put some romance in it - the result is the same. It's just like, say, writing a fantasy novel. It'll be similar to other fantasy novels, and eventually SOMEONE will say it's a rip-off of Harry Potter of Lord of the Rings.

Still, I liked Finding Neverland better. :)
