It's unconcious, but I think it's still alive'

this was said by jose when he was catching up with nina at the subway, and passed her the teddy bear.

anyone who could interpret what this meant? any symbolism in this?

reply

The teddy bear took a terrible fall (her dropping it) and recieved a head wound (unconcious) but it's okay...I guess it's his small joke

reply

it could be his small little joke.

but could it also mean that although Nina sees regret in herself (state of helplessness) after knowing that she is pregnant - but Jose tries to tell her that she still has hope?
Similarly, he is telling himself the same..his hopes and dreams are dashed by that one incident, but yet there is still hope for him.

maybe i'm reading too much into the lines

reply

Not to be a jerk, but yeah, you are :) He didn't even know she was pregnant, so he wouldn't be trying to give her hope in that regard. It's not your fault though; blame grade school literature classes for trying to get their students to try and find meaning in every freakin' word. :)

See bonus features on the DVD: The writer/director explains the statement eluded to Jose coming to life after being unconscious for four years.

Here's lookin' at you, kid!

reply

Call me a cynic, and maybe I am, but that sounds like a meaning that was applied to the line later, as opposed to that line being originally written with it.

Don't forget, there is always so much back story for characters that don't play out explicitly in the course of a movie. If the director says that's what it meant I'd go with that. Perhaps you just don't buy it, but it was still the intention.

reply

i think he meant the teddy bear has a soul.

reply

i guess it was just a way to make she smiles, remember that she was fire a few minutes before, so it's like tell to her "hey! life seems terrible now, but it will be better"
