The little girl that Jose hit with his car (Lucy) had been playing with a butterfly. So everytime he sees a butterfly he thinks of her.

i loved they way the butterfly was used in this film
Lucy was playing with that butterfly and when she meets with the accident the butterfly lay there and later it sort of fly's away,symbolizing her going to a better place.
and in the end scene at the beach if you look at the sky thers a butterfly kite or somehting like that flying above them like Lucy is at peace and has forgiven him.
The butterfly was such beautiful imagery.
I agree with lostsawyer2000's comments on the symbolism.
I was also wondering if the butterfly could also link to the earlier conversation that took place when Nina asked if Jose thought people came back and lived again. I thought the butterfly may have represented Lucy's soul and hint that it came back in Bella so Jose could take care of her and his soul could heal, too.
