Arthouse for Dummies?

Anyone think this film was rubbish?

The half eaten apples? the shot of the train to long island twice as if it was different locations?

clumsy film making. I can perhaps see how people who haven't seen many films think its quite 'alternative' and refreshing to see such a warming family drama compared to the thrillers that are churned out.

but the dialogue was crap also. it was so cheesy. 'he couldn't play soccer without passion' - didn't anyone just laugh when nina was telling that crap story about her mum. so obvious.

I love debating.

this film was a joke.

that's all i'll say

you're an idiot if you think this makes for good cinema..

reply

Your an idiot for thinking everyone should enjoy the same thing.

This was a great film and a refreshing change from the *beep* rammed down our throats by hollywood.

reply

Im going to take offense at that

A rather blunt statement, but yes, I agree. The film felt amateur and a tad pretentious. I thought the "soccer without passion" was leaning on the cheese as well, as well as the "cry it out". It's too bad 'cause I was expecting this movie to be fantastic, considering it won at the Toronto Film Festival.

That's awesome! I think that's the most succinct statement I've heard in a long time.

Soylent Green is people!

LOL! Right on the spot. The title of this post is exactly what watching this movie felt like.
From the moment I heard: "My grandmother used to say...", I said to myself: "Oh, cr@p..."

I can't believe the ratings this film is getting. Are the pro-lifers stuffing the ballot box, so to speak, here and at Netflix?

What a bunch of schmaltzy, melodramatic tripe. I can't think of a major plot development that was believable. The two main characters pretty much whine their way through the movie.

This wouldn't even qualify as decent TV. Big disappointment.

I did an unwanted pregnancy double header and watched this and Juno back to back. I found the latter to be slightly pretentious and overrated to be honest. Bella, by contrast, definitely had an earnest tone, but I still think it was a superior film. Yes, it is a corny movie, but it has a heartfelt and compelling story arc. Also, you can spot the film school cliches in both films, the difference is people are quick to bash this film because of the political/moral agenda it promotes, yet they praise Juno (which has an agenda of its own as well)and its unrealistic, hipster dialogue and plot.
