What a Depressing Ending...

While I thought it was done well and all, I really wish some things could have changed. SPOILERS, obviously

1. Katsushiro+Kirara- I was really upset that this didn't happen, I think katsu has a much better personality than kanbei at the start, and kirara could've prevented him from turning war-crazed. so he goes to be a samurai for life at the end?? what a sad ending for that guy =( i would've hoped he'd get together with kirara and live happily ever after in the village as captain of the guard or something.

I also thought her transition from katsu --> kanbei was really sudden? like a hint or two in eps 22 or 23 or w/e, then "omgiloveyou kanbei!" kinda sux cuz katsu loved her and kanbei didn't!!!

2. Kyuzou- KILLED BY A GUN? BY HIS ALLY? NOOOO!! I felt sooo bad after watching that happen! poor guy, i thought he cared a lot for the village towards the end, telling them to "finish the job." i hope he gets to fight kanbei in the afterlife at least.

3. Kikuchiyo's death- went down saving the village, i'm glad for him. but poor komachi!!

4. i might be alone on this, but i feel like ukyou's assistant ex-samurai with the
pipe was a bit underdeveloped. he seemed to have some morals, but pushed them away
cuz of his "samurai duty." would've been interesting if he was the one who sliced ukyou at the end or did something to help the samurais

5. for some reason, i thought kanbei-sama should've died...it seemed like he had it coming with all his losing battles, dying to win his final battle would be a pretty nice end for him. and why'd this guy have to win kirara's heart huh? -.-

well those are my opinions, any thoughts?

Well If you enjoyed this series I would recommend the original movie Seven Samurai. It is #10 on the top 250 of imdb. It's been a while since I have seen it, but I do believe Katsu does get the girl in the movie and all the same people die in the anime version. The movie was released in 1954, but i is truly a masterpiece. You can see how all of the characters develop in the movie along the same lines. Though of course there are no machine samurai. My guess is that the machine samurai in the anime represent the samurai of that time when some laid down there swords, beliefs, and lifestyles of the samurai to pick up gun and fight for the Emperor's army. The movie doesn't really leave the setting of the village though after the 7 samurai are assembled.

ok thanks a lot! i'll get that movie or at least rent it.

i hope kyuzou gets a more honorable death in the movie! his death was too heartbreaking in the anime

From what I remember,he did die a more honorable death.

Getting killed by friendly fire though.

What a way to go </Sarcasm>.

He was the strongest of all the samurai too :(

1. It's not so sudden, it was already hinted at early on the series that Kirara was quite fascinated with Kambei while she treated Katsushiro like dirt. Even the opening animation focused on their eyes of their attention, Katsushiro's eyes are on Kirara while Kirara's eyes are on Kambei.

I don't know, I just don't like Kirara's character, she acted like she's so civilized and corteous, when she's nothing more but a greedy teenage girl. Her character and her treatment toward Katsushiro pretty much ruined the story for me. She didn't even exist in the originial movie.

Kambei's strong older man personality though probably is quite attractive to a teenage girl like Kirara, unlike Katsushiro's weak young man personality.

However Katsushiro is just like Kambei when he was young, Kirara probably think that the end result going to be the same anyway.

5. I guess they want to add a plot twist. Personally, a good ending would be the remaining samurai to move out of the villages after the job is done and start looking for another job, while the villagers continue to work on their lives.

Kambei unwillingly mentoring Katsushiro, because Katsushiro keep following him against his wish. Making him able to resolve his past.

While Kirara stay in the village, rebuilding her village.

Yeah the ending perplexed me. I didn't hate it. It just left a very unbalanced ending. I felt Kambei should have died. It would have resolved his character. And Katsushiro should have stayed with the girl. i mean, he treated her like gold. Plus it would have given him a motivation for the future. Because if you think about it, Momataru has a place to go back to, and a girlfriend there. But when that happens. Where is Kambei left to go?

Plus, they never really explained Katsuhiro's history! Where did he come from? What was his motivation? Where did his deamons come from?

It was depressing in a lot of ways. Specially when Kikuchiyo sacrificed himself, and he was one of my favorite samurai out of the 7. But I'm not one of those people who throw a tantrum whenever something like this happens in an anime.

Despite the ending having my favorite samurai died with honor, this is a good anime to watch no matter how the ending turn out to be. I mean there's a few other anime I've seen that had moments like this one.

Very ture

I told you to let us go did I not? To think that instead you would choose your own death –Samurai 7

IamTheCheese2, do you mind-read? I thought *exactly* the same.

1. Kirara being attracted to Kanbei seemed underdeveloped and rushed. I could see why a girl *in general* would be attracted to a Kanbei-type. But Kirara's seemed sudden. Yeah, yeah her crystal choose him. But to me that seemed less about love, and more about him being the village's protector.

2. I didn't think Kikuchiyo (Robot Samurai) should've died. I wanted to see him reunited with Komachi. He was put down whole series by everyone. I wanted to see him truly redeemed, welcomed as a hero Samurai finally.

3. Kyuzo death. They built him up as the elite warrior determined to fight Kanbei...and kill him with friendly fire!? Come on. His character should've died but not like that.

It ended like The Seven Samurai & The Magnificent Seven ended ~ a lot of them dying. I like realistic endings like that instead of the same old repetitious, glorious, oh yay everybody lives happily ever after! endings. The ending of Samurai 7 was perfect.
