Not ANYTHING like Samurai Seven.

Besides similarities in the basic story, the feeling of this and pretty much everything about it bares no resemblance to Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece.

That being said it's an enjoyable anime.

i haven't seen the entire series yet, but it seemed close enough to me; Especially the 1st episode. As the series went on, it did seem to drift away from the original plotline. Hopefully they'll try to stick with the story. I don't mind the sci-fi twist either.

I agree with you, (the comments are based on the first 8 episodes)

we should warn the fans of the original film, that this is just an inspiration.
I was so afraid when I saw in the preview the giant mecha samurai coming to earth... That is so far from what Kurosawa intended in his movie.
I prefer as a related story what Leone did with his western.

Anyway regarding the Anime, we shouldn't discredit it. It shows that it is a big production and that the quality is there. I like the animation and the drawings.
What I don't like is that they kind of simplified it, made it broader. More family oriented, though the anime are normally older oriented.
We just need more original stories, instead of copying old ones. But this is such a classic that I have to agree it is hard not to be tempted.

I hate how people confuse story and characters. Seven Samurai's story was quite simple (town's in trouble, townsman goes to get samurai to defend it, samurai defend it). I know that's over simplified, but its the characters and characterizations the drive the rest of film after the initial set-out. From Kambei's clever plans and training to Kikuchiyo's wiley yet intelligent ways to the torrent love affair between the young samurai and the village daughter. This is a character-driven picture, not a story-driven picture. You want a real story-driven narrative, check out The Da Vinci Code for example.

That being said, the characters are well-preserved, but presented in an original way to fit the future world of Samurai 7. It's taking the character(ization)s of the film and plopping them in a industrial distopic future, and it works.

I'm a sucker for steam punk so naturally I liked this adaption a lot. There are worse versions of Seven Samurai that are out there - like A Bug's Life. UUUUGGGGHHHHH! Watch that mess and it'll give you major appreciation for the Samurai 7 series.

The series starts off fairly similar, but gradually gets more and more different from the movie.
Only the general premise is the same in both the movie and the series.

Actucally it is very similar, as someone already stated, it is character driven and the charcter's were close to the film. The premise to the story is still the same....samurai with nothing to lose help the farmers fight the bandits for very little rice as payment, and the deaths of the characters were the same.

If you really saw both,(movie and anime series) you would know key parts of the dialouge were taken directly from the movie ie.....the village elder said "why worry about your beard, if you are about to lose your head" this is just one of many lines that were in both the movie and anime.

There were quite some similarities.

I'm assuming you meant to say "Seven Samurai;" otherwise your topic makes no sense whatsoever.
Besides similarities in the basic story, the feeling of this and pretty much everything about it bares no resemblance to Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece.
It was an adaption, not a remake, for pete's sake. And it has TONS of similarities, including the basic plot-line.
That being said it's an enjoyable anime.
And yet you complain. Some people just like to complain, I think.
