I'm a big fan of the original Seven Samurai (also the Magnificent Seven) and most anime. I really liked Death Note, DBZ, and have just started watching Bleach. I love all of Hayao Miyazaki's movies, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and stuff like that. I was thinking about just buying the Samurai 7 box at Best Buy but I'm not really sure. Recommendations?

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. It's not exactly the same as the original, and I know some who simply turn away at the idea of men cutting down giant robots with samurai swords, but, as a fellow fan of the film, I was very impressed. The plot is faithful, though it does get to a point where they build it off into original, though equally valid, territory. The characters have the same level of depth and conflict as their film counterparts, even though some have been cleverly changed. And, most importantly, the captured the complex social system with the segregated classes forming a cycle of sorts, and great complications arising when that cycle is upset.
Definitely worth a watch.
