A little confused at the ending...(Spoilers)

WTF....someone please explain why Kisuhiro(the guy who says sensei alot), I might have spelled his name wrong, gets the sword from his master and leaves..I dont understand where he's going...to continue figthing as a Samurai? And what does the master and his friend from the hotaru inn do after the ending? They just walk off to peace for the rest of their life? I also thought that the girl with the glowing pearl liked the younger guy but she liked his master? Im confused as hell.

reply

Katsushiro you mean?
Kanbei gave him the sword, as Katsushiro is determined to become a true samurai, the more battles he is in the more experienced he'll become.
Kanbei and his 'wife'? Not a clue, probably his 'wife' will go back to the Firefly inn and live out his days there, Kanbei will probably drift from place to place as he did before.
Kirira was more interested in Kanbei than Katsushiro, though it was slightly confusing at the start, but Kanbei wasn't interested.

it`s simple

Kambei gives his sword to Katsushiro

this means 2 things

1...Katsushiro is no more a kid,he is a grown man who survived a war and can be called now a samurai, and his master`s sword is a simbol

2...Kambei desires no longer to fight....he finaly won a war but he desires no more

I've noticed on a lot of boards that people have concluded that Kanbei wasn't interested in Kirara. However, I'm closer in age to Kanbei than I am to Kirara, so I picked up on something rather subtle in Ep. 24 - Kanbei staring into his tea cup with wistful regret. He understands that he has only two paths ahead of him - death in the capital or life as a renegade for killing the Emperor. He can't ask Kirara to share that kind of life. Shichiroji said it - why didn't Kanbei tell her earlier that she didn't have a chance? He had plenty of time at the Firefly Inn. I found the scene in Ep. 26 where he is sharpening his sword in the shrine while Kirara watches very poignant. It suggests they came to some sort of understanding before he leaves in the end. This series was much more "adult" than many others i.e. Samurai Champloo. It's emotional subtlty reminds me of other adult fare like Grave of the Fireflies or Millenium Actress. I guess that's why I liked it so much.

Kambei says it best in the end . The rest of the seven have no purpose in the village anymore , so they have to leave. The only true winners of the battle are the villagers.

I just finished watching the series and I must say that the ending was not very satisfying. I mean, too many people died and Katsu/Kirara never got together. About the only thing good that happened was that Ukyo died and Sanae/Rikichi made amends. Is there going to be some sort of follow-up like Fullmetal Alchemist did (which was MUCH-NEEDED if you ask me)?

As for Katsushiro, he is off to fight in another war, just as Kambei did. In other words, this war that we watched was the equivalent for Katsushiro as the original war was for Kambei. Katsushiro must now go fight in another war as Kambei has. Right there at the end when Kambei gave up his sword, I saw it as Katsushiro as just a younger version of Kambei. They are almost completely alike.

In this case, very similar to the case of FMA, an epilogue would be a saving grace. The ending is one of the big draw-backs to this anime that many people don't like.

Don't get me wrong; I like the twisted and evil endings just as much as the next guy (it adds to the suspense of other movies and also the unpredictability, as you aren't sure if the ending is a 'desirable' one or not). Man on Fire is a good example of this. Good movie, but generally dark ending.

I just don't like to see so many things go unsolved. Where does Katsushiro go after this? Where does Kambei go after this? What happens to Ukyo's father? Who does Kirara eventually shack up with? As I've said before, the only thing that really changed after the destruction of the capital was -4 samurai, Ukyo (Nobuseri/Bandits) died, and Sanae/Rikichi seemed to be getting along. Too many un-tied knots.

Kanbei killed Emperor Ukyo so outside of Kanna Village he's probably considered a renegade. And Ayamaro seems happy enough working for the Guardians. Katsushiro is drawn to battle and has little purpose outside that paradigm. You're right though, none of the samurai seem content with life outside the sphere of battle. Even Shichiroji who's got a steady girlfriend tends to get nostalgic for the simple days of battle whenever matters of the heart come up (Sanae/Rikichi, Kirara, etc). And poor Kiku wouldn't have lasted one season as a farmer. Fishing one afternoon with the girls made him itch for battle.

Gosh, I totally agree with you. I watched this with two of my anime-obsessed friends and we all disliked the ending. Despite the fact we thought Kambei was way too old for Kirara...
The whole time I was wishing Kirara and Katsushiro would end up getting hitched or something, while I knew it would never happen (blame my hopeless romanticism, please), I was really sad when Katsushiro left at the end.

Ok, here's another one. Does Kiara have regrets over Katshiro? At the end when they're in the village, she seems to watch him practice alot and then before he leaves, she follows him and starts crying (and we never see how it's really resolved). Is she sorry for what she did to him? Is she thinking, man, at least he wanted me. I'm still trying to figure that one out but in all honestly, I haven't seen all of the episodes yet (just up to where the first battle starts and then the last 3).

I'm surious about Shiroji, did he go back to Yukina? He seemed the only one who might actually settle down.

I think it is the second to the last episode, if you watch those little epilogues where Komachi is writing a letter... she explains pretty well the relationship between her sister and Katshiro. Kirara never actually had romantic feelings for Katshiro. She felt guilty for leading him into a life of violence and pain, and wanted to comfort him, but he (and we the audience) read her signals wrong. She always liked Kanbe.

It was shown early on the series, when Kirara first saw Kambei, it was like love at first sight. While she treated Katsushiro like dirt despite his affections for her.

The opening animation showed that while Katsushiro's eyes are on Kirara, Kirara's eyes are actually on Kambei.

Only the writers decided to torture the viewers with the possibility of Katsushiro and Kirara.

I personally don't mind Kirara with Kambei, but I just don't like on how Katsushiro was treated, that guy suffered a much worse fate than Amuro Rei.

This series love story is just so dark.

Oh well, at least Revenge of the Sith don't have Padme chasing after Obi-Wan while leaving Anakin in the dust.

reply

Kirara was basically just using Katsushiro.

She licked the guy's hands clean. She knew what she was doing.

Anyway, one can assume that Kanbei will drift,Katsu will fight in wars,Kirara will probably settle down with a villager.

Sad,sad story.I thought the movie went out on a lighter tone.
-------
She gives hints all throughout the anime.

Like someone else mentioned the opening, where Katsu is looking at her,and she is looking at Kanbei.

The bandages.

She blushes after he helps her up.

She wasn't acceptive of Katsu's kiss.

She see's Kyuzo as a threat that could possibly kill Kanbei.

Etc,Etc...Yeah she was a ****h.She was too glorified. She wasn't even important for most of the movie.

i enjoyed this anime but the relationships were not age appropriate at all, especially when Komachi asked Kikuchiyo to marry him and he accepted, ew. how old was she? 10? younger? it's not even like that scene was played for laughs either; at least if it was, i didn't see the humour.

as for Kirara she was too blind to see that the right man for her was there all along (Katsushiro); still hopefully he found a woman who would genuinely love him, but sadly he probably ended up dying on some battlefield somewhere.

Never, never to be squandered...the miracle of another human being.
