Jean had about as much character as my socks.

Even in the very very few scenes the actions of Elmaleh's character Jean showed some personality, it felt very much out of place given how under the whip the character was all the time otherwise. That scene where he pretended to call from the room service to annoy the other guy was particularly weird and uncalled for.

The movie was circled around Irène (Tautou), but she couldn't really carry the whole movie here.

On the contrary, he managed to pull it off because he did work at a hotel earlier. It seemed like it came naturally to him. Apart from that his character was meant to be quite hesitant and mild mannered, so I would say he did have character.
