Whites and English

This film which is supposed to be funny is bloody depressing. It is on Channel 4 right now and I can hardly watch it.

This is why.I am an American and I studied at Leeds University in the late 80s. I didn't live on estate like the one portrayed in this film but I had friends who lived in similar places.

My friends were English. I never heard then refer to themselves as anything else which is logical enough. Question: when did the English stop being the English and become the whites on council estates?

reply

When all racism occured in everyday lives. this is shown in the film =]

have a walk around urban ghettos where you are being overtaken in numbers by asians and when you are younger,it is plausible to describe yourselves as whites especially if your white friends are scottish, irish ,polish etc as well as english..and to be honest most(not all) groups of ethnics and whites stick in with thier own kind..so its a reality of uk life nowadays...theres estates where white british people can not enter safely..and estates where asian people wouldnt be safe either, depending on the make up of area and nutcases on both sides living there...i know,i entered an asian enclave in oldham and wasnt a very welcome person..believe me..i got out fast, and had to arrange to meet the asian man i was meeting,on nuetral ground 3 days later

Please don't say Asian. Say Pakistani. I'm Indian and you want see us do what happened in Oldham.

reply

^ Sorry? Ok, from now on, I shall not be referred to as European. Say English.

(By the way, I was being sarcastic. You are Asian, seeing as India is of the continent Asia. Please stop being petty. This country is PC enough as it is.)

reply

It's not being petty. I understand that English and Polish people are completely different in terms of behaviour and language. I don't group them together as being the same kind of people. It's got nothing about being PC.

Reckless, I am an Indian Punjab - partially mixed with Afghan - but I am Hindu. And Pakistani's are the same as us - well they are the same as us Punjab Indians anyway in race, culture, and language only our religion is different.

The thing is the Pakistani's in the UK have given all Pakistani's a bad name - a lot of them are lower class and from cheap families in the poorest rural areas of Mirpur - if you see the Pakistani's who live in Pakistan from main cities like Islamabad such as the cricketer Imran Khan, Ali Zafar, Adnan Sami they look and act completely different to the Pakis over here in the UK.

The Pakistani's here have given them a bad name - but people shouldn't judge all Pakis.

It's like if the poorest, chavs from the most deprived areas of England moved to Spain - or any other country they wouldn't set the best example!

Only reason why the behave differently is cos they are brought up here, in the urban areas.

People get influence from any country they are brought up in, weather long term or living.

I acted quite different when i returned to England after 3 years travelling in Asia. Took me one year to adapt.

The British Pakistanis that behave badly are no worse than any other nations kid brought up here.

no offence meant sir...the incident i mentioned happened a day or two after the riots and it was in glodwick. The man i was meeting to deliver too met me in a safer part a few days later.he was pakistani and sound as a pound as is a mate of mine who is pakistani/punjabi living further into oldham.

True that many Asians, Blacks, and whites at times don't get on in the UK. I live in Harehills where whites, asians and blacks all get on very well - the fact that someone is a different race doesn't even cross our mind at all - which is a good thing. I have never personally been discriminated against - then again I live in Leeds which is very multicultural.

Recently though I added this Pikey on facebook and she wasn't very nice to me lol - she called me 'Paki, Suicide bomber' and all other derogatory words you can think of - what was funny is that she was the same skin color as me anyway - and even more funny is the fact that Gypsies have genetics and ancestory from Pakistan & North India lol.

So it all depends - I think the reason why some people hate Asians in recent times though is because of Muslims and the problems caused by the extremists in their communities. Usually Sikhs and Hindus (who look the same as Pakistani's) get targeted due to the fact that people think they are Muslim, I have never heard of anyone in the UK hating Hindus & Sikhs specifically.

These days I think racial segregation in some areas is more due to cultural contradictions than the color of someone's skin, or ethnic appearance.

A great posting..theres good and bad in all whether asian white or black

It was a comedy, it addressed lighter issues - there has always been a 'working class' community in the UK - places like Hull, and Liverpool and Bristol are known for. The film does deal with certain issues such as racial segregation but in a comical way, the actors were great as well - I live in a similar area called Harehills which is also in Leeds. It isn't as rundown as Beeston and it isn't a council estate but still a pretty rough area - there are the 'trash whites & South Asians and Blacks' in my area - most people get on just fine - I don't get what you mean by when did the English stop being English?

By this do you mean English people shouldn't inter-mingle with other races - and all become BNP/ NF members?

This film may have been more successful than you realize. I have just been reading the other posts. Quite a discussion about how people are interacting these days.
