What makes a weighted average?

After reading all of these comments, something definently doesn't seem right. I dont know what the weighted average is based on. I personally liked the film. However, the "low rating" does seem kind of strange considering the breakdown of the voting. I did see in other movies that weighted average is usually lower than the arithmetic, but there is something not right here.

That's what I wrote in my report. The "weighted average" system is clearly malfunctioning in this case, because only top votes get neutralized (eliminated really), leaving the forming of such a low average to unaffected bottom ones. Well, blaiming the system is my theory - for now.

I'm not sure what they are, but IMDB has ways of figuring out who's biased or voting for suspicious reasons: For instance, if someone has only ever voted for 5 films + gave them all 10 + those five films are all by the same director = director's friend trying to up the rating. In this case I would guess they weed out people who have only ever voted for a tiny number of films, given them all 10s, and they're all LDS films.
