The mother

Why is the mother so skeptical of her daughter's report of animal antics? It's as if the screenwriters didn't see the first two movies. (They did of course, but...) Why is she such a pill? Why does she treat her gifted, exceptional daughter like a disturbed teen or juvenile delinquent? Sure, in the first movie she was perturbed and a wet blanket because she didn't know her husband actually could talk to animals. But the writers seem to be going back to that well even though it no longer makes sense. Annoying when there's a logic/character inconsistency just for the sake of moving a plot forward.
