Didn't like how ignorant they were

I actually liked this movie a lot, but I didn't like how Guy came along and "civilized" them, and how before that they were scared and stupid. It made them look like idiots, and it made the dad look like the worst idiot of all. Obviously, it wasn't supposed to be accurate, but c'mon. Their talent was supposedly brute strength and agility, but how had they never looked at the stars? Gone swimming? Hunted with spears or fashioned knives and containers of some sort? Watched the activity of different animals and plants to teach them about nature? They were just a little too stupid for me to suspend disbelief. And then Guy came along bringing all the technology, and the whole saviorism thing really didn't sit well with me.

They were probably just conforming to how we believed Neanderthals were about 50 years ago. Recently scientists have started to believe they were just as intelligent as homo sapiens they were just unlucky and went extinct

Their opposable thumbs were different from ours though and they weren't capable of throwing a spear like modern humans like guy. There's a debate on how intelligent they were but supposedly their vocal ability to form certain words were more limited than modern humans.

But you liked the movie? The whole point was that they, particularly Grug, went through a transformation that was brought about by need and through the help of the wonderfully geeky and hip new "Guy" who had all the cool new tools and creative ways of problem solving. It wasn't so much about "civilizing" as it was about letting go of strategies that had their time and place and moving forward (following the sun to tomorrow).

They missed the stars because they stayed in the cave when the sun went down. They had not gone swimming because they had not ventured beyond a small corner of the world. They clung to the known because it meant they were safe that way.

Obviously, I watched the movie. I guess I just feel their life was so claustrophobic that it's hard for me to accept the world within the film. It just feels impossible to me that they could have spent every single night in that cave and have never explored even an ounce of the outer world.

It is impossible, but as this is fiction, comedy, animation, and aimed at children, you have to accept that part of the story as a set up for the things and themes that follow.

Also, consider it a creative thought that leads to, "What if...?" Stories would be boring if they stuck to the strict restrictions of real life.

you are deluding your self if you think that's what entirety of human history was about. Very large number of really stupid, and occasionally someone smart would come along and push and pull for everyone else.

Even today, world is 7 billion strong on stupid.

I agree. But you know what? I'll take their stupidity over that, "The baby acts like a wild animal," crap any day of the week. Ugh! That was so stupid and unnecessary, in my opinion.

I figured it was like having someone who grew up Amish and without any benefits of modern Technology or medicine and coming across someone who uses the modern technology.
