Why always in strapless gowns?

I may be alone in this, but I think the strapless gown is not very flattering on most women. Why are these Celtic women always wearing these gowns? I don't even like it as a bridal gown option. It is especially unflattering on large women (large busted, and large women in general).

I am inclined to agree with you in a way. The large, and large busted, ladies do kind of hang over the sides.
And a couple of the chorus ladies...well, I don't want to offend anyone, because I love these Celtic Woman shows...but I understand what Jane here is saying.
But, then again, I personnally wouldn't care if they were in jeans and t-shirts!

Ditto !

And I don't think I would look good in a strapless gown myself. It's also not kind to a bit of a tummy.

These women are beautiful and have great voices. Why not a v-neck gown like they wore in the 50's (ala Marilyn Monroe)? Much more flattering.

I totally agree. I have that little bit of a tummy that you are speaking of.But then again, I will never be caught in a strapless gown!
Lisa's white gown in "A New Journey" was pretty, and suited her well. Maev looked like she was scared to death that she would flop out of hers!
Oh well...flopping or not, I love them all!

reply

I think they look quite nice on Lisa and Meav (though even I was worried--well, not worried, more just curious--that Meav would, in fact, pop out of hers)!

:D

"I believe in peace, bitch."

reply

I think they should go for a topless look myself. You know, like Queen Maeve leading her warriors into battle. Strictly for historical authenticity, mind you.

I think the O.P.'s post is deeply offensive and insulting. No wonder women have eating disorders, with attitudes like this out there.

If the O.P. has hang-ups about curvy women and prefers the media anorexic look, that's her problem. But I think curvier girls look gorgeous in strapless, sleeveless gowns. In fact, they look much better in them than do underweight women, whose protruding bones make them look like concentration-camp victims. It's excessively thin women who actually look bad in strapless gowns, since their inadequate curves can't even fill out the dresses properly, and the fabric hangs on them like limp material. But fuller-figured girls give their dresses a gorgeous shape, thanks to their feminine curves.

And I'm specifically glad that Celtic Woman wears these dresses. Hopefully it will give their younger female fans more confidence in their figures, so they will be free of the kind of body-shame that is exhibited in this thread.

I said that style GOWN is unflattering on most women. Solution: women should find gowns that are flattering on them (whatever size). Don't you agree that flattering clothes look better on people than unflattering clothes? Large busted women wear v-neck clothing very well (and gowns with v straps ala Marilyn Monroe).

I said nothing of weights or what size women should be - period. If you find my comment that strapless gowns are unflattering as deeply offensive and bulemia-inducing, I'd said you're too sensitive. It's my opinion and I'm sticking too it.

Go get 'em Jane! Well said.

reply

Wow! Guess we always offend someone, no matter what. Did you happen to see the part about jeans and t-shirts? Or topless? We all love them...chill!

reply

Thanks for the support, oldfatandornery. LOL. I think there is an issue there with "lussurioso" who clearly read more into my message than I ever, ever intended. People see what they want to see.

I'm sorry, but both Jane and her fan club are being disingenuous. Look what you wrote:

It is especially unflattering on large women (large busted, and large women in general).

That's a pretty clear-cut case of prejudice on your part. How does the word "large" not have something to do with size and weight?

Sure, everyone is after flattering clothing. But you're presenting your idea of what you think is "not flattering" as if it were a statement of fact, when it's just your particular opinion. For my part I happen to agree with the previous poster who said that strapless look great on buxom girls, in fact better than on flat-chested women.

Ultimately, this is like two people trying to "prove" that red is a prettier color than blue. It's pretty futile, since it's not fact, but mere taste.

LOL -- okay, so how do I describe women with big breasts other than "large-busted"? I was trying to be kind. You assume all large busted women are large women. I was not making that leap.

If you've seen Celtic Women, you'll see there are some very slim women that are "well endowed up top" (is that better?). Geez, people, stop looking for something to be about body weight when it isn't.

Ask yourselves why you're projecting something onto my message that truly isn't there? I'm a woman. I am not slim. I am not large busted. I have no agenda here other than getting women to rethink strapless gowns. LOL.

I think that is the REAL issue here is what do YOU have against gowns with straps? LOL. Clearly you have prejudice against gowns with sleeves or straps. LOL.

What an argument! It's so funny! Who really cares? We all love the Celtic ladies! So Jane and I think "well endowed" women should avoid strapless gowns! So? That's an opinion!
Believe me, before my breast reduction surgery, I wouldn't touch a tank top, much less a strapless gown...but, that's just MY opinion.

And I still say Maev looked a little on the nervous side...I've been there! Only I've never been singing on stage to a bazillion people. Gosh. Guess I haven't been there. Oh well.

I understood Jane's original comment. She wasn't putting anyone down. Just restarting a topic, and stating an opinion. Well done again, Jane!!!

In fact, that is EXACTLY the leap that YOU made, which is why I quoted this line from YOUR message:

It is especially unflattering on large women (large busted, and large women in general).

YOU said "large women in general," so YOU made that leap.

Laugh all you want, but your prejudice is pretty clear. And it's attitudes like yours that give girls a complex about their bodies that they could definitely do without.

Hopefully the next generation of girls will grow up without this kind of shame about their figures -- whether the Janes of the world think of them as "large," or not.

I don't care what body type a woman has, a strapless gown is not very flattering. Period. That was my message. That's my opinion to which I am fully entitled. (So many women wear these dresses without a necklace or anything..which just makes it worse.)

How that got twisted into "image issues of the next generation of women" is beyond me. LOL. Are we clear now?

The woman with the fiddle -- her dress does nothing for her. The only really pretty dress is the gold and navy blue.

The green dress looks like an 8th grader's homecoming dress.

Certainly, and with this statement, as it is now formulated, I have no objection whatsoever, because you have not made it an attack on any particular body type, but a general fashion point.

I disagree with it, because I find strapless gowns very flattering, but I can definitely appreciate a difference of opinion on what is or isn't a flattering dress -- on any body type.

Word is that Orla is going to be replaced by Susan Boyle. Now there's a woman who's going to justify the whole existence of the strapless gown.

reply

Ahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!
THAT was funny!

Having just seen a rerun of the holiday special, I would ask not just "why" but "how?" At l;east in Meav's case. Her strapless gownes look like they're clinging to the nipples for dear life and that she's just one sneeze away from a "wardrobe malfunction." The thing is she isn't even that bosomy. She must use some kind of adhesive. Ouch!

reply

i agree that strapless dresses are not my favourite, it sits oddly on a lot of frames
