reply

dunno, i dont know why you are intrested though. this movie just glorifies war

reply

Did you even watch it?
Do you understand what glorifies means?

reply

If far from glorifies war. It shows it in all its futile exploits. I mean, come on! The men were all ragged and defeated, they weren't running around like rambo firing arrows with missiles on the ends at enemy soldiers.

reply

It's merely a war story that's far from actually "glorifying" war as one of the earlier posts stated.

If you say that, then it's obvious the closest you've gotten to watching the film was seeing the commercial once and forming all your ideas of the film around that.

I wouldn't be surprised if the movie doesn't get spread widely internationally. It doesn't seem like a subject foreign audiences would take much interest in.

reply

haha! i guess im not really a war type person then, what war movies should you recommend?

reply

i recommend Missing In Action and The Warriors

reply

How is the warriors a war movie? If your talking war movies, you cant go past Saving Private Ryan and Apocalypse Now.

mid 20th century street gangs are formulated around a military backbone. they have commanders and luitenants and 'go to war' with other gangs for turf. The Warriors is a perfect war film as it depicts the brutality of war and the duality of man.

that is the dumbest thing i have ever heard, tell me, is "The Goodfellas" a war movie, it fits your description

What we do in life, echoes an eternity!

Duality of man, my aggressive friend.

You need to remember that war films are in fact 'anti-war' films.
These films deglorify war by showing the effects that they have on the people who fight them and the triumph of the human spirit in what's probably the worst environment any person could enter.
War films glorify the people caught up in wars by telling their stories of unimaginable 'courage, mateship, endurance and sacrifice'.
These films are an attempt to prevent wars from occurring by reminding us of their futility and complete idiocy, and so ensuring that we never forget those who sacrificed their lives for eachother, their countries and what they believed in.

Well I don't know why you folks in the US and UK would be interested. You blokes don't know about the Kokoda trail and watching this movie will just make you say 'Meh that was so ficticious' or 'It's nothing special, I'll just go watch Saving Private Ryan'. I'm sure *eventually* you'll get a release, but I doubt it will be anytime soon.
I mean it is an excellent movie, but Australian films aren't really appreciated over there. Gallipoli was a different story...that had Mel Gibson's name on it.

What a load of bollox, I first heard of Kokoda in the pre-internet days of the 70s, and as for 'Australian films aren't really appreciated over there.' Again bollox! It isn't that they aren't appreciated, its because your film industry doesn't push them hard enough, we rarely get to hear of Aussie film releases in the UK, they just don't get pushed enough by the film companies, if I want to see recent releases I have to wait for them to come out on DVD or for them to be shown on TV.
The only one I can think of that has a UK release recently is The Proposition.

Please don't think about all Americans this way. Yes, you're right in that most Americans don't even know when the second world war was fought much less know a thing about New guinea. But trust me, there are many of us here that have a passion for history (and good film-making) so keep that in mind when making generalizations!

Personally, I've spent years reading about the pacific war (and there's so little in the way of film on the subject) so I'm really hoping this is eventually released stateside.

I love these people who get upset about movies, who say things
like "it just glorifies war" or "i'm not a war type of person" I love the way they compare the modern day wars to the world wars. I lov ethe way they drink the freedom provided by our grandfathers and then crap on the way in which it was provided.

Reality is, war is sometimes needed, if it wasn't for our grandfathers who fought this war, we would not be the nation we ar enow. I don't have relatives that fought, but this story still means alot to me, cause its the story of my country, they died to give us freedom, they stood up fo rthose who coldn;t stand up for themsleves. how about people show THEM some respect

I wouldn't write Kokoda's overseas release prospects off just yet. Their overseas sales agent is Arclight - very well regarded and successful - Arclight sold Wolf Creek for example. I wouldn't be surprised if these guys got Kokoda into cinemas in the US and Europe. It is a quite Australian story but it is such a visceral, experience film that I can see it having a life for overseas audiences even if they don't know the history. With Clint Eastwood's Iwo Jima movie coming out (don't remember the name sorry) I think that there is probably rising interest in the Pacific campaigns in WWII in the US and elsewhere.

reply

Good for you. It doesn't really make a difference were you come from in terms of appreciation, just whats given to you.

reply

Eastwoods film is to be called 'Flags of Our Fathers' about the men who raised the flag on Iwo Jima.
