Question for Plotdigger

Hey now Plotdigger, I'm a big fan of yours, Live Feed was really good and I'm gonna watch Torched later tonight. You're work on AUM was shocking. You're fx resume is incredibly impressive. You're a staple of the Canadian FX industry.

I was wondering if you knew of and good fx schools in Central/Eastern Canada. I live in Nova Scotia right now and have yet to come across anything that could help me out. I'd like to do what you did, by beginning with fx and then moving on to writing/directing. I tried the film school thing but that didn't work out.

Maybe there are a few good study by mail fx courses that you know of.

I worked on an A&E movie of the week, The Riverman, about Ted Bundy and Gary Ridgway so I got to hang out on the set a lot when they were preparing and dressing up the dead bodies, it was really cool to watch the whole process and it was something I was really interested in...But I never really got any info on where the fx guys and gals learned their craft. Any advise?

Thanks,

Fulci_Kills

Hey Fulci Kills,

"The Riverman"!! Damn, it'd be wicked to hang on a serial killer movie set for sure. Is that the one with Cary Elwes as Ted Bundy? He's a good guy, I did an episode of "The Outer Limits" with him about ten years ago.

Let me answer your question now :) It seems as though you have your heart set on being involved in the movie business which is awesome!! You can do the make-up effects route many different ways. 1. You'll need to find out who is the GO TO guy or gal in Nova Scotia for any movies shot there and you'll need to get in touch to ask them if you could assist in any way, volunteer style at first. You can do this by calling the IATSE office in Nova Scotia and asking to leave a msg for the Make-up Department. 2. You could move to Toronto and take the Complections School of Make-up course which is a good one but at the same token, you could move to Vancouver and take the make-up fx courses that I teach. Either way, that move is a big one and you really need to know that FX is for you before doing the move. 3. You could take Dick Smith's mail order course which is amazing and very cost effective, at your own pace kind of thing. You'll have to google all the above for websites as I don't know them off hand. 4. You could start doing make-ups on your friends from info off of the net and if you have questions you could PM me.

You may be a film-maker at heart and not an fx artist or a bit of both. You should mess around with mini-dv films and make-up fx. And start getting your stuff online for people to see.

You can do it!!! That's my advice. You went to filmschool but it didn't pan out but alot of wicked directors drop out of filmschool, so no worries.

Just start, every weekend, spending some time working towards your goals and after a few weeks, you'll see results.

And thanks for the kind words about my stuff!! Wait until you see "Gutterballs'!! That's going to be something else for sure.

Take care,
RY

I provided the bodies, specifically the dead little girl in the bathtub at the end and the maggot covered baby, plus stuff in the garage. Toe Tag did all of the gore fx and gored up the bodies, they did a wicked job. I get a credit at the end of the movie for additional props.

You provided the girl? Nice! How much work was done on it before you sent it to them? Did it look like it did in the movie (or, almost) or was it just the prop, looking like a prop? Either way, good job. I've yet to see any of your films (couldn't find an unrated copy of Live Feed, refuse to watch anything that's cut, can't find Torched for a reasonable price) but I've seen clips, and from what I've seen, you do good work in the effects department. Keep it up.

You can't argue with my logic! Well, you can, but I won't listen!

Hey,

The props I sent out were to my buddy Killjoy who helped with the movie. The awesome team at Toe Tag did a great job making them sick as hell and adding all the slimy blood and ooze, maggots, etc... to really make the gags sell. They did all of the make-up fx work, including fixing up a bunch of my old props that were collecting dust. The body really looked sick in Mordum, way sicker than when I sent it out.

Wow man, thanks so much for the response and advise. Not to be an ass kisser but it's amazing to talk to you and get a response. You're easily one of, if not the most prolific fx artist and up and coming horror film makers in Canada. I'm not sure if they put fx artist on the Canadian walk of fame but I know you'll be there for sure one day. You're the Canadian Tom Savani/Stan Winston/Dick Smith all rolled up into one. As a fellow Canadian I'm stoked to have someone with your talents representing our country.

The Riverman was the film with Cary Elwes as Ted Bundy. It's was shocking how well he portrayed him. My first day as a PA, on my break I was hanging over by the mock volkswagen bug of Ted Bundy's that they had on set. I'm checking it out when all of the sudden I hear someone behind me...I turn around and it's Ted Bundy, Cary Elwes in full make up and costume. It was such a creepy experience. Mr. Elwes is such a focused actor that when he's in full make up and costume, he IS Ted Bundy. It was fascinating watching him calm down and get himself out of character once the scene was over. It was clear the part of Bundy took an emotional tole on Mr. Elwes. After every scene he would have to go off set and unwind to get himself out of character.

Again, thanks so much for the advise. I'm gonna google the IATSE office in Nova Scotia right now. The Dick Smith's mail order course is also something I'd be very interested in as well. I've got a lot valuable info that I'll be looking into right away, infact as soon as I'm done writing this.

I'm eagerly anticipating Gutterballs. After watching Torched, I'm very curious to see if Gutter-"BALLS" will be just as extreme, in a nut sack kind of way...lol

Thanks so much Mr.Nicholson. You're movies make me proud to be an aspiring Canadian hardcore horror fx artist/film maker.

Hey man! Thanks for the posting and yeah, Elwes rocked out as Bundy but still not as good as Mark Harmon in "Deliberate Stranger". Keep me posted on your progress and if there's anything I can do to help, lemme know. I'm busy as hell with GB but we'll be wrapped at the end of July. You'll dig it! It's really over the top in every aspect.

Peace, your Canadian Bro,
RY
