Did anybody notice this was foreign from the beginning?

It's a good film and obviously low-budget, but from the very first few minutes, I thought it was French Canadian.. Then I heard the next person speak and I thought it was perhaps South African, then Dutch and then Belgian and of course I saw the Belgian (red and white without the blue EU logo) license plates.

I think the film has a hard time establishing where it is actually supposed to be taking place and it took a while to realise it was an International school with International students. Or was that actually established?

Either way, it was a witty movie that had its moments.

They esetablished that in the opening of the movie.

It's established pretty well, IMO. Besides the name, Brickland International High School, which was mentioned and shown several times, much of the cast had accents and were clearly not American, including the Vice Principle, the main bully, both of Chance's friends, etc. Chance's father is obviously a military man stationed in Belgium.

The aspect of the setting that I thought wasn't done too well was the film taking place in the '80s. I mean, yeah there was the whole fashion thing, but most of the characters were so quirky that it was more about their personas and less about the decade they lived in. I'm also pretty sure I saw a bunch of modern cars throughout the film. I dunno why they just didn't have it be modern day.

I'm also amazed that the leads were in their mid-twenties during the shooting of this film. In any case, I loved it.

You're right. I rewatched the movie and saw the whole beginning so I got it. What confused me is when they referred to the night club as being "21 and over" which doesn't make sense anywhere I've been in Belgium?

Anyway, the film made me laugh and I had enjoyed it anyways.

reply

It didn't take place in Belgium. It was set "Somewhere in Europe". It was just filmed in Belgium.

So I noticed the "somewhere in Europe", but assumed it would still be filmed in either in the US or Canada, seeing as that is most often the case. But then I recognized at the start of the movies some casts names as being Dutch/Flemish, and then I looked it up on IMDb.

The suitcase guy actually really speaks English like an average Dutch-person.
