excellent anime! watched all 76 episodes and both movies in less than a week :)

but what happens with the ippo vs miyata match? do they ever get to fight? anyone read the manga?

Go to www.Dynamiteglove.com if you want to read the manga. But...no...they haven't fought yet. They came very close at one point however it didn't happen. However the series is still just as good as ever. I'm still hoping that one day they'll make new episodes. Unlikely but possible

If they ever do fight it will be at the end of the series and this is assuming Randy Boy Jr doesn't kill Miyata in the ring.

Well itagaki couldn't get away from Randy Boy Jr. Hopefully Miyata has some special counter or something up his sleeve cause it's going to be one hell of a fight between them.
