I didn't realise this was a remake.

I stumbled on Mostly Martha a few days ago. It was made 6 years earlier, in German and, as a European film, is less bright and shiney and a little bit less cute but just as enjoyable. It's near as damnit the same story - perhaps because it's the same writer, Sandra Nettelbeck who also directed the first version. And the cast is just as good - so, happy accident that I stumbled on it and one of these days I'll have to sit down and watch them back to back.

Finally got around to watching these films back to back - well, consecutive evenings - and enjoyed them both equally well.
Inevitably there are differences and a film student could probably write a decent compare and contrast essay on these. But perhaps the most interesting difference is between the German and American trailers on my Mostly Martha DVD. The German trailer gives an honest expectation of the film. The American trailer chops scenes from all over the film such that the end result could be any generic romcom, and I wonder if that did the film a disservice.

Three years later - watched 'em both again just because that's the mood I'm in. Quite useful having big stacks of DVDs to rootle through when looking for a particular type of film to watch. They are virtually the same film, shot from the same script, but you can still watch and enjoy both in the same evening.
