Are you talking about the special where Densha travels to Tahiti to find a black pearl? If that's the one, sorry to break it to you, but I wasn't impressed by it. It was really silly (even for its precedent's silliness), bereft of a cohesive plot & absolutely a prime example of the sayings "scraping the bottom of the barrel" & "squeezing it for all its worth". Just stop watching DENSHA OTOKO until the "ANOTHER ENDING SPECIAL".

^Agreed. Deluxe was disappointing for the most part, although the ending (with Densha on-stage) was pretty good. Deluxe is something that takes away more than it adds to the series.

In the context of the series--how well-done it was, and the sense of humor it cultivated--the Tahiti episode was perfectly acceptable. Especially since it took place after the actual series ended, and they reverted very comfortably to the original formula in the next episode. It was much too self-aware to be taken seriously. They were focused on humor because the series was over, and who cares? I think it worked just fine; it only needs to be watched with a grain of salt.

Deluxe episode for me was a great mix of rabu hina and Densha Otoko, I thought it was very like Keitaro when he left Naru to work abroad.

Also the number of stars they brought in for it from the movie version of Densha, Akihabara@deep, AKB48 Team A, Death Note and not to mention the fact it featured Maki-san & Shun Oguri from Hana Kimi...Sugoi yo!

(^o^)> "Otsu! Ganbatte, Densha-kun"

I watched the special yesterday and I don't think I liked it overall, which is disappointing since it's the last time we'll see the characters.

I know the series had some wacky comedy, but I thought the stuff in Tahiti was just too ridiculous. And really, the whole idea of the black pearl could've been cut without having much of an effect on the rest of the plot. It felt like it was added just to lengthen the story and to have an excuse to go to an exotic location.

The special started pretty well, though. I loved the opening, with Akihabara being taken over by "normals," and it was clever to incorporate the real-world popularity of the story into the world of the TV series. There's the scene where Densha looks at the poster for the movie and says he isn't as handsome as the actor who plays him (I think it's a common complaint that the actor in the movie was just too good-looking to play such a character). Still, I wanted to see what Densha and Hermes thought about becoming so legendary, even anonymously.

I also wanted Densha to talk to Hermes about the people searching for his true identity, instead of cutting off contact with her. Really, I just wanted more between those characters. The whole series was about getting them together, so let's see them together. I think the special could've had the two of them with each other more often and still had the stuff with the grandfather and with the bad guy trying to profit off of Densha's identity. Densha and Hermes could've talked to each other about their problems and tried to figure out what to do instead of just breaking up once again. They were apart so much that it felt like the actors had incompatible schedules or something. The Guitar Man special did a better job of showing them together, even though they had pretty minor roles in it.

One other thing I wanted was for Hermes to have some reason to post to the message board. Maybe she could've rallied them together at the end or something like that, but it just would've been funny to see how the other people reacted to her.

Anyway, the basic plot of someone trying to determine Densha's identity wasn't bad, I just wanted the characters to spend more time together (without breaking up), and for there to be a decent reason for them to go to Tahiti, if they went at all. It was nice seeing the characters again, but I wish they could've been in a better story.

I agree that there wasn't enough of Saori. She wasn't very well developed in the series either, and I was hoping that this special would allow her to step up and be PROactive rather than just reactive. But hey, I suppose that's the norm for female character in Japan and just about every other country. Overall I still liked the Deluxe special a lot - it definitely had me laughing as much as most of the episodes.

By the way, anyone know where one could find that ukelele/ocarina cover of "The Imperial March" that plays when Densha is talking to his doppelganger in Tahiti? Haha.
