Terrible film, even for low budget!!!

It was absolutely rubbish. I was really looking forward to seeing a great Punisher vs Wolverine film but the acting was dreadful, the chracters were seriously lacking.....everything. This isn't how Punisher should be!!! Since when did Punisher wear a body suit??

reply

This is indeed an awful, This is NOT the punisher at all. Wolverine was good, but In the main the acting was terrible. The sets and props were good, but The punisher talked too much, it looked more like a max payne film than anything. Sosner should not have cast himself as he couldnt pull it off.
I made a fan film where The punisher went face to face with Batman, Were working on making more punisher films, and to be honest, I think we have captured the charector more. Quiet, incredably violent at times, wise cracking at times, tough as nails, cold as ice and tormented by memories of his family.
Tom Jane is indeed the ultimate punisher and no one has ever captured the role like he did. We did our best and I can say we did a damn better Job than Sosner,
and we didnt have half the budget he had. To be honest I cringed while watching most of this. I have seen worse though I must say.

Look, this movie may have been low-budget like a *beep* but it was STILL far better than that abortion Lion's Gate put out two years ago. The acting was the only weak point, and it wasn't entirely horrible. Other than that, the plot was well-done, the pacing and the editing were tight, and I loved the use of the voice-over--one of the few times it actually worked in a film. Theshapecool, more power to you if you can make a better flick, but uh...your spelling and grammar don't give me much hope for your screenplay.

A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chiante.

reply

Well Lionsgate did a better Job than this film anyday!
And I know my grammar can be pretty bad....but I think we all know
that scripts are printed out and spelled checked!
I can make a better movie than this, Because the Punisher wasent the
Punisher from the comics at all, Like I said he spoke wayyy too much and
would have made a better Max Payne. If anyone prefers this to the Lions Gate
movie....well they really need to go and do some homework or get their head
checked. I cant believe how popular this film has got when I cant see anything in it. Everyone I know said the same so I dont know. But I wont be adding this
to my favourites.

What didn't you like about the Lions Gate one?? The fact that it was dead on to how Punisher would be?? Theshapecool is right, in First Round Punisher spoke way too much, it was just annoying and crappy. The sets were rubbish as well, okay I know it was low budget so i'll let that one slide. This film really isn't anything special at all.

Have you ever read a Punisher Comic book? You must be one of these new Punisher fans that believes he runs around with a T-shirt- "This isn't how Punisher should be!!! Since when did Punisher wear a body suit??" ( It was a Kevlar vest.)
have you read the review from Variety ?

So? Fan films are in a lot of ways the high-tech decendants of fanzines, allowing die-hard fans with the time and the money to bring their favorite
comicbooks to the screen exactly the way they want to see them. The quality of these films has increased significantly and they've become quite popular at cons and even film festivals, despite the obvious legal issues. This pic even has its own page on the IMDB. And for all the things that may be just a bit off or of less than professional quality, there are things these filmmakers often get very right. That's exactly the case with "First Round," a fan-made film that pits the Punisher against Wolverine with cameos by the Kingpin and Jigsaw. Sosner stars, co-directs and produces the pic, which began as an audition tape the actor made for last year's Punisher feature. Sosner didn't get the role, but the audition evolved into this film, which has a good comics pedigree with storyboards from artist Tommy Castillo and cover art from Darick Robertson. (There's even a cameo by Jim Salicrup, a former Marvel editor best known for handling the Spider-Man titles in the 1990s.) There's not a ton of plot (it is only 13 minutes long), but the tone is ripped straight from the comics as Sosner in a good-looking Punisher costume shoots down the evildoers and squares off against Wolverine. Sosner definitely has the right look and uncompromising attitude for the Punisher. Similarly, Von Sydow gets Wolverine right in a lot of ways, from the smoking cigar to the menacing gutteral growl and dialogue peppered with the word "bub." Their fight is surprisingly satisfying with a pretty neat old-school visual effect and a resolution borrowed from Garth Ennis's run on The Punisher that settles the fight in a funny-painful way. There's even a short animated sequence recapping the Punisher's origin with moving comic art images. The homemade nature of the film shows through in the sound work, with dialogue sometimes out of synch with the actors' lips. The visual effects are crude and some shots in the action sequences look overly staged. These are things fans likely will be willing to overlook, given the overall good effect the film achieves. Of course, no DVD would be complete without extras. "First Round" includes a "making of" short (that's shorter than the movie, but not by much) and a preview of a planned sequel called "Eye for an Eye" that will make more use of the Kingpin and Jigsaw and uses scenes shot in Times Square. The DVD is available as a promotional demo or the pic can be downloaded to your computer through Sosner's website. Grade: B-

Nope i've been into Punisher comics for a long time now, since I was about 9. Anyway, it was a crappy vest, look at it, those aren't his muscles.

Anyway, bad acting, brilliant idea, bad film!!!

Since you were nine, huh? And that was what...ten years ago, tops?

"No 14 years ago"

Wow, so that makes you all of what, 23? And you started reading Punisher in say, '92? At the height of one of the worst periods in comics history as far as quality stories were concerned, all Image (cough, cough), no substance? Try again junior. Punisher has been out since 1974, which means you missed a good 17 years of Punisher stories and trust me, the best ones were written before you started reading them. The only ones that have been good since then are the ones Garth Ennis wrote.

Kids.

This might be cheese, but this is a fun fan film from guys who obviously love the comics. It's better than the Dolph Lungren film or any Marvel tv movie from the 70s without the Hulk in it.

They didnt matter in the larger realm ...but they still mattered. Thats what struck me as pathetic.

reply

Of course you're gonna think yours is better...because it's yours.
Hey I have an idea for ya, instead of bashing other peoples work Why not ask if they would like any extra help on it or on their next project.
I have been bashed by people and so have my friends and I only one thing to say about it SHUT UP OR SHOW UP. (Meaning: Stop saying hurtful things and/or help out)

reply

If I lived in the same country as Him I would help out myself as this guy really really needs it. Wolverine was pretty good, But not great.
Sosner should not of cast himself as the punisher, he did a terrible Job.
He talked too much and came off as a wise cracking Max Payne.
The fights were over staged and the quality of the film really ruined it.
Its not exactly a long film so the compression could of been a hell of a lot better. The sets were good, but this film was really lacking.
I just Didnt find it fun to watch, it just felt like a poor Fan Film.
Maybe there is hope with 'eye for an eye' Wich Is doubtful, Lets hope that
Sosner dosent cast himself this time and gets someone who can handle the charector.

Forget about him working on anything for you, I was a cast member in a film with him and he was completely useless. For example, He was asked to provide an eye as a prop which he failed to do and blamed another crew member.

During filming he told us that he didnt learn his lines for that day because he hadnt checked his shooting schedule and didnt know what scene he was doing (this almost caused a riot onset him and the rest of the cast and crew). He also said he didnt read the entire script because he didnt want to ruin the ending when he watched the film.

Another thing he stated was film festivals were of no real use to film makers or actors.

So it would be a safe bet not to request his help.

Having checked IMDB he doesnt have any films listed or even his name. Maybe when he does he will be qualifed to speak in the way that he has done.

reply

Hahaha, I hope that post was a joke!
ok first off I didn't get the eye because I needed a pigs eye and to be honest there was no point because the director wanted the eye to pop out...but asked for just the eye and no fake head...thats not gonna work is it???
You NEED a convincing fake head prosthetic piece to make the eyeball effect work, I was doing makeup on this film yes but I am not a makeup artist, I guess the powers that be decided that a fake eyeball on top of the real eyeball would work....no I don't think so.

Secondly I'm not the best person at remembering my lines its true, but since the shooting schedule is was always being screwed around with it got confusing.
As for starting a riot with the other actors, I don't think a 'tut' and a giggle is a riot?

Me forgetting my lines was a bad move as an actor, It shouldn't happen and I accept responsibility for my mistakes, but this was hardly a big issue. The Big issue was the director leaving an actor who had flown in from Scandinavia standing around doing nothing while he was obsessed with filming the whole cast doing karaoke. which he shot on a decent camera with a proper mic but shot the Scandinavian actors with a crap camera.

I didn't read the entire script no because I didn't want to know the ending. My charector died before the ending so I didn't need to know.
I would of liked a little mystery when I saw the film myself. If I get to.
They started filming this movie a year ago and planned the release date for July 15th 2006...stupidly. When you start a feature you must allow more time than a month to complete it....isnt that common knowledge?
Now a year later they're still working on it even though principal photography finished end of June last year. How long does it take to edit a movie?
They still haven't finished filming althogh officially they have. Vital parts of the script where left out for some insane reason.

I don't know what cast member would of said this about me,The cast on this where really nice people in the main so I'm a little confused.I'm guessing its the director, Joe Jenkins. Who most people I know have said he is useless and has zero talent in film making. Most people who worked on the movie 'the board' said that about him. this is just an example of his childish behavior.

I've put up with a lot of crap from him and other people on this movie. Luckily there where some really genuine people who have become good friends with me, we all share the same thoughts on the movie and its director.

Next off, I have more credits on here than most of the people on that movie so I think I'm more than entitled to my opinion.

I wouldn't trust the opinion of someone who planned to use compact discs cut in half, attached to sticks to double 2 swords for a scene.

I have tried to make contact and patch things up with these guys and its pointless every time. I just had a load of *beep* from them about another role for a project where they where just lying and *beep* to me. Probably the most unprofessional film makers I have ever worked with and I have seen more professionalism from students.

I made a god awful, *beep* Halloween fan movie ages back and to be honest I think it sucks, yet a member of the cast on this movie told me not to worry as it was still better than some of the stuff these guys had done.

well thats my rant over. if someones going to badmouth me without knowing or seeing the true facts, that have been told, verified and agreed with by most of the people on that movie.

Its safe to say I wont be working with these guys again.

I agree with OP, this thing stinks. It was too cheesy and cheap looking even for a cheap fan film. The amount of amateur films and videos i have seen is huge but this is one of the worst among them. Concept was good, the rest plain bad. No need to list what's bad i guess huh?

reply

Its a fan film. I havent seen it yet I actually just saw it in a retro game shop for 2.95 and decided screw it check it out. I don't expect it to be amazing or anything but I like to see people who try and if they don't succeed at first let them learn from their experiences.
