Thanks for your comment Andy. You just have reinforced my belief that mexican cinema is better appreciated outside the mexican borders (especially in Europe) than in México.
recently lots of new filmmakers have directed their first or second film. Many of them have been recognized around the world because of the quality of their works; from Berlin, Cannes to Toronto, Sundance, etc. Sadly in Mexico certain groups still have this stupid idea: For them any mexican film MUST be a BAD film just because it is a mexican film. In the other hand, for these people, Hollywood flicks MUST be ALWAYS better. I don't have to explain you how flawed is that logic, I guess.
Something similar to some extent happens in Brazil. Local people prefers Hollywood movies and relegates to a second place their own cinema. But then you have most critics agreeing on the fact that Mexico and Brazil have produced some of the most interesting films from the last 10 years (Roger Ebert and Peter Travers among others).
It's not only Amores perros and City of God. Even smaller productions like Malos hábitos (Bad habits) or A Casa de Alice (Alice's House).
Cheerios.
