Was Katya manipulating Pierre the entire time?

Was the only reason she took him back to his apartment to manipulate him into doing an interview and to reveal so much about himself? Was anything she was saying/doing real or was it all an act?

reply

I don't think she did the entire time, actually. I think she started doing that when she started lying to him about her cancer and that stuff

I think she genuinely felt sorry for him knowing she sort of caused the accident because the cabbie's attention was on her. When she realized Pierre was a lost cause I think she turned on the acting. She probably saw him going through the computer and decided to manipulate him there.

Sophia Bush is amazing.
Ralph Fiennes needs an Oscar like I need a woman.

I think she decided to play him when she first noticed that he was trying to sneak into her personal files.

Both Pierre and Katja are rather bad people and manipulators. Both of them were psychologically traumatised one way or another, both are excessively selfish. They're products of the society committed to success; their humane sides are limited to personal safety and family. They are quite typical as characters, you'll see them in the crowd tomorrow morning.

Or even earlier, when she (may have) noticed him slipping his camcorder in his pocket before engaging her in some more "honest & open" conversation.

** SPOILER **

When they split, they said there's one thing in common between them which is that they don't believe in relationships. That's how their life experience taught them and left a deep impact inside of them. No one night or event can undo this impact.

Sure there's a lot of truthful moments and stuff that they shared that very night, but once again that didn't change their views and personality. When Katya discovered that the reporter tried to sneak into her computer and diaries, she knew that he wasn't genuine when he said he was interested in knowing more about her. That's when she decided to play some game with him. But it's not really important whom. They were both trying to protect themselves in their own way but failed in every attempt.

Manipulating Pierre's confession starts when she goes into the bedroom and starts to do the "muffled cry" that she referenced right after her show was on. She becomes her characer on the show at that point...after her own confession, sobbing (the other cry) when he threatens to leave before his own revelation.

"While I can appreciate the responses of two subsequent posters who proposed that "Katya" began to manipulate "Pierre" after she caught him looking through her personal computer files, I can't help but wonder whether the manipulation was prompted, instead, by Pierre's use of Katya's on-screen boyfriend's name when accusing her of not loving her boyfriend (which tipped Katya off to Pierre's violation of her privacy)... Yay? Nay?"

TabbyGirl, I thought this, too. I think she was slightly suspicious when she saw him using her computer, initially. But I don't think she realized anything was really awry until he mentioned her character's boyfriend. That's when it snowballed, as Pierre began reading dark segments from the faux diary, which Katya then decided to play along with.

I think she was testing him a bit early on in the apartment. When she finds out that he lied about not seeing any of her movies, that must have caused her to step up the mental games part. The kiss was part of her power trip combined with curiosity. I think she knew she could emotionally get the upper hand if she got him to want to *beep* her. But I don't think she was being malicious. It was more of a dynamic thing.

But once she realizes something was up when Buscemi was saying things that must have come from the diary, I think she pretty much was in "Game on " mode. And when he mentions the name of the boyfriend from her show, she knew exactly what she wanted out of the meeting.

reply

I think she is playing him the entire time so she can fine tune her acting skills. It was one big acting lesson for her.

Yeah, overal i feel the manipulation was from the start, going both ways. That was the inherent logic of the film, and its observations of the media and celebrity relationship.

I feel the manipulation others have pointed to are fairly keen observations, but are merely points that move the manipulations to a new angle/etc

As somebody else said it's certainly a study of the media and celebrity relationship. Pierre has a superiority complex and Katya is your narcissistic personality disorder celebrity. Pierre can barely conceal his hostility towards her in the restaurant, and Katya feigns interest and uses his accident as a chance to make herself look good. Basically both are so self absorbed and manipulative that the rest is a tango to maintain the upper hand using whatever they can.

Both Pierre and Katy were manipulating each other. Most of the things said to each other was genuine. Most of the things they said to each other was a lie. It's up to the audience to determine.

Pierre was arrogant against her, so I think at some point she decided to show him what she is able to do and that she's by far not as dumb as he thinks...
