Couldnt Buscemi get an actor to play the Male role?

I doubt it would have made much difference but perhaps only 1 character over acting would have made the nonsense more palatable.

I think the original director requested that it be an actor-director, and specifically Buscemi

The original director was already murdered before Buscemi got in the picture.
Buscemi just liked the part so much that he let his wife persuade him to play it himself.

i agree. buscemi is a terrific actor. whether he's playing a lead or supporting role. one of the few actors or actresses whose mere presence in the cast of a film will compel me to see said film.

i agree. i think that he's the perfect person to play the role. he's good at playing a character who is both charming and annoying at the same time. if they had stuck some george clooney type in the role, the entire movie you'd just be thinking about when are they going to have sex and get it over with. with buscemi in the main role, it allowed you to focus on the many facets of their situation.
