Did anyone like this movie??

Just wrote a review on it as I thought it was particularly bad acting...but does everyone else think?? Did I just not appreciate it because I'm not gay (and not even a man :-)) or was it just plain bad??

reply

im gay, saw it at the queer film festival in montreal a few hours ago
and its not just you
its horrible acting, and the directing was meh....

I mean they had a lot of gratuitous sex scenes which is fine for porn, but they just ddidnt have much of a place in this movie... especially the way they were done. And I thought from the trailer it may be a visual style, but the visual look wasnt bad, it was just the lack of chemistry.... I dont like being mean and i always try to look the bright side of a movie, but for me, this movie just wasnt good. There are soo many better "queer" films.

ETA:
And I am not a prude(well a bit), but I have no problems with nudity, and even sex ina movie, but if there was a point to the scene... but to me the sex scenes in this movie were for the most part useless.

reply

Yep, totally agree with you!! I think they put in the sex scenes to attract more viewers (though I cannot say I found them to be particularly great, and that is not only because I am not gay -- I have seen a number of gay films and I think gay sex can be very sexy -- does that make sense??).
There are indeed lots of very good gay movies -- that's why I try to catch them whenever I can!!I you have recommendations, I'd like to hear them!!

reply

Yeah If you have good gay recomendations Id like to hear them. Cuz I dont know any gay movies that much. I found Open Cam at blockbuster cuz it was one of the only gay movies and plus it was the hot guy on the cover that drew me in. I kinda like when Harrington and Manny had sex, it was kinda cool. That dude that played Harrington was hot. Yeah I though the movie was mediocre, I guess cuz of the poor production values. It felt like they were using a horrible camera, like the one in sugar.

reply

OMG! I have some

Ethan Mao (VERY VERY GOOD!!! SUSPENSE!!)
Quincenera (The title might be in spanish, buts its english)
Sugar (Very Great Movie!)
Fake_Id (Funny, and a relationship about a str8 guy and a gay closeted guy and the camp, lol)
Um, right now I'm about to watch Open Cam

reply

I am kindof replying to everyone on this message board. My partner and I watched it last night and although the sex scenes sparked a fun time later, I didn't see howthey pushed the story along. The actors were handsome, and the story idea was GREAT...I think with the ionternet and new technology out there, people can come up with GREAT ideas for thrillers. I think this film truly could of been GREAT!!!

I think you can do a GREAT thriller and have HOT sex scenes still....look at "Basic Instinct". I mean you see some male nuditiy in that, and I found that film to be great (somewhat formulaic, but it had a great pace and acting) I am sure some will disagree with me..

I have to admit though....as much as I didn't like the acting...Amir (Hamilton) was absolutley hot....Im a 35 year old male, and can appreciate young handsome men, but I REALLY find me around my age or older who look healthy and have that somewhat dark side to them.. he seemed a little sinister and looked great in the white underwear...

Now, some of you were asking about some excellant Gay themed films...

Actually some of my favorite films are lesbian films.

*BOUND ----- MY alltime favorite film!!!!!
*Lost and Delirious --- My 2nd favorite
*The Sum of Us -- My favorite gay male film with Russell Crowe)
*Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert
*Brokeback Mountain --- Had some great sexual scenes that were played out well! (Which I am sure you all have seen but thought I would put in still)
*Philadelphia
*HellBent ---just watched last night...many people didn't like it, but I thought it was a new and unique gay horror film.
*Cruising (Al Pacinos great thriller)
*Silkwood (not really a gay thriller, but Cher is a lesbian in it ) ha ha
*All Over the Guy (Great comedy with EVeryone Loves Raymond Delores...she plays his mom)
*The Adventures of Two Girls in Love (Think that is the name)
*Claire of the Moon
*My Beautiful Laundrette
*Priest

There are more but I need to get some work done!!! Have a Happy Holiday everyone!

reply

How about:

*Jeffrey
*Get Real
*Trick
*Love! Valour! Compassion!
*Go Fish (a lesbian one)
*Boys in the Band (not on DVD yet)
*Beautiful Thing
*Maurice
*The Living End
*Making Love (dated but interesting)
*Six Degrees of Separation
*Threesome
*Just Another Gay Movie (I HATED this but others loved it)
*Eating Out (hate this one two but, again, others love it)

There are more but those are the only ones I can think of.

OR if you want stories mixed with explicit sex try Michael Lucas' "Dangerous Liaisons" or "La Dolce Vita". Basically he's remade those two movies as all gay male movies with X rated sex scenes.

Hope this helps.

Also try :
Parting Glances (one of the earlier films to deal with AIDS in film, and it's my personal favorite)
The Trip (fun, and touching)
Latter Days (great love story. But get the un-rated version, if all your looking for is Eye Candy)
Food of Love ( based on book 'THE PAGE TURNER' by David Leavitt)
Lost Language of the Cranes (also based on a the book by David Leavitt)
Relax... It's Just Sex (has a really great cast)
Get Real ( great, along the lines of Beautiful Thing)

As well as those posted, there is alot out there, good and bad. Just depends what you are looking for.

Boy Culture, perhaps the best gay film I've ever seen. http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0433350/

So many movies, so little time...

reply

I'm about half way through it, and it's pretty damn bad. And the line on the back, scenes that would make QAF fans blush, HA.

reply

Better Than Chocolate is by far the best gay/lesbian film I've seen.
Velvet Goldmine is good and I definitely recommend the soundtrack.

Someone posted earlier about Two Girls in Love, the full title is The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love. (A mouthful I know.)

And I agree that Basic Instinct was formulaic, but still very well done.

As for Open Cam, I haven't seen it yet though I have seen a music video for some song that appears on the soundtrack. I just found out about the movie but I'm not sure if I should seek it out or not.

reply

No, it is really, really bad. I dont reccommend to anyone.

reply

I watch a lot of gay films, and I'm always on the look out for new gay horror films, but I've noticed that pretty much all gay horror films seem to either be something akin to a softcore porn (with scenes that don't generally add to the storyline) and/or have really bad acting. It's incredibly disappointing, since a lot of them do sound like they'd have a lot of potential.

reply

I don't understand everyone saying the sex scenes in this are unnecessary; the film is based around the idea of a gay online sex site. I'll agree they're not done very well, but doing this story without them would have been a bad decision. The crux of the problem is really bad writing, which undoes anything good done by anyone trying to cope with it. In a word, the writing sucks. The directing and acting are all amateurish, but also hindered by the source. Blame the writer first, because a silk purse, or even a nice leather one, still can't be made from a sow's ear.

reply

The acting and the writing are terrible...this is not a good film. However, I found it to be somewhat enjoyable because I tend to like bad movies such as this one haha. The idea could have been interesting, but the acting, writing, etc. were no where near where they should have been to make this film work...worth a look if you want to see skin, sex, and a *beep* story!

RIP Off the Map and V...Ringer on The CW this fall!!!

I really liked this movie. It was so good that it pulled my husband away from his video game. The acting was well above par for a gay indie and it actually had a consistent plot that made sense. Other reviewer praise the cop Hamilton (Amir Darvish) but he was the only one who couldn't act. The characters seemed like real people, not the campy, screaming queens that are so often portrayed in these movies.

reply

The acting and writing are horrible. And the main characters are ALL unsympathetic. Complete idiots. Manny was a complete idiot. The ex was a tool. The cop was a complete a**hole. I hated it.

Manny deserved NO sympathy. He sucked.
