the end. the robber and abby?

abby looked at the bank robber the way she looked at ira when they first met...am i the only way that feels this way? can someone explain the seen to me, i'm confused.

reply

It was a dream sequence. It didn't really happen. Ira was imagining it.

reply

oh, i'm not talking about the "dream sequence". I'm talking about the very end of the movie where she meets the bank robber working at a fast food restaurant, i think...seriously, it's like minutes away from the movie credits.

reply

I think she was just surprised to see him and impressed that he got his life together. I didn't get the feeling that she was looking at him in a romantic way.

reply

yes, she waas happy for him.... straightening up

bank robber?...i thought it was a subway train

reply

Absolutely. That's exactly how I interpreted the scene.

Furthermore, because of Abby's good graces, and just overall generous and purely sweet personality, I believe the guy got his life together because of that subway experience. It was so unconventional, dangerous, and generous, and he probably thought... "that woman was so sweet... why am I robbing people? This isn't right." And it's obvious with him giving her all the change, that that was foreshadowing his life improvement later in the film.

Westfeldt's writing is so fresh.... god. What a charmer.

reply

ya i don't think it was a romantic thing either i think it was just her personality showing how she gets close with people and all the robber wanted was someone to be nice to him and she had an affect on him like she did everyone else.

reply

Abby believed in the goodness of all people. She knew he was, inside, a good kid who desperate for money and would not hurt anyone. She smiled because her instincts about the subway guy were validated when she saw him cleaned up and working.

reply

I agree with the others who said she was just surprised and happy that he had straightened his life out.

I thought she was at a movie theater with a date, who kissed her before he temporarily left her - and she stepped up to the refreshment counter to find herself facing the subway train robber. I thought there was a hint of romance in the way they exchanged glances. However, I also think Abby's focus is going to be on trying NOT to get involved with someone quickly and also choosing people whom she can get to know really well over time.

She always got to know people really quickly - which is a blessing and a curse in her case. It led to her marrying quickly, for example. But REALLY knowing someone is a much different matter. That's why I thought Seymour Black's speech about how you never really know someone even when you are married for a long time was particularly good for this movie.
