Ending aside, this is what really bugged me.
They set traps, had trained attack dogs, moved stuff around and had an obviously planned ambush....... it goes on and on....... yet he never cottened on to this? To me this is what really spoiled the film. The book and the previous film versions all openly acknowledged they has a brain. It was Nevill's thought process and methodology that was the point.
I am pretty sure he was aware of their intelligence. If you're referring to how they ambushed him at his house as not knowing they were intelligent, I beg to differ. How could he possible know that on that night he would be attacked? I'm pretty sure he was expecting it eventually to happen, but didn't predict it would be so soon.
Also, isolation and repeated failures at finding a cure would probably mess with his mind. His mentality was that he would not leave until he found a cure to fix them.
He didn't find out until the day of the attack when he saw the trap they set. The trap was set was the same day he met the other two. When daylight came he went back and realize they are intelligent. It's not like he ever studied them without them being unconscious. He doesn't sit down and talk about science and life with them bro.
