Ooh, yeah, no...
Season of the Witch is pretty cool, but I prefer the fights in Gladiator. Look, comparing them is a little strange given the vastly different plots, styles, and if nothing else budgets, but Gladiator has SotW in one very important aspect: it's got more character.
Maximus is struggling with big things, having his life broken down and now is trying to rebuild it. He seeks revenge, which is powerful as a motivator, but he's also re-learning how to find compassion, care for justice, and re-awakening his love for Rome as an ideal.
In Season of the Witch, Behman witnesses and causes atrocities in the Crusades, then desserts and leaves. He's press-ganged into taking the witch (?) to trial, but he doesn't seem like his heart's in it. He isn't really struggling with anything. He doesn't resent the Church for forcing him back into service. He doesn't question the witch, or the others, he just kinda goes for it. And his personal journey doesn't seem to shake him to the core. Contrast this with Maximus whose very philosophies and closest loves are obliterated in his struggles. He's got a lot more at stake emotionally and psychologically.
It's not that Behman couldn't have had that depth, but the script doesn't spend enough time on him.
Don't get me wrong, the film is fun, but it's not as good as Gladiator.
