Petition To Stop Future American Versions Of Good Japanese Movies

Starting.... now.

Stop.

reply

I hate people who thinks their opinions are better than others. Some people (including me) don't find those remakes THAT bad, and I'm quite glad that they're made, cause I probably wouldn't have known the original if it wasn't for them.

Besides, it's not like those remakes prevented Japan from making any other movies. Just don't watch the remakes and stop whining.

reply

Look how many people agreed with me though. And yes, the remakes ARE that bad. If you wanted to find out about Asian movies, I mean come on, you have an internet connection right? It's not too hard to search for them or find out if any are good, just search on google for "Asian movies," it's that simple.

Whining? How am I whining about something that I'm giving a comment about on a movie website mostly dealing with rating them? There was my rating about the idea of them making *beep* American versions of Asian movies. Any other idiotic things you want to throw out there sir Dickins?

"it's not like the remake hurts anyone"

No, it just totally insults the intelligence (not to mention Miike Takashi) that's all. Not to mention just completely missing the more subtle points that the original film was trying to make... People try to compare remakes to song cover versions - erm, when was the last time a cover version cost over $100 million dollars to record....?

People who cant be arsed to find out about the originals dont deserve good films, they deserve trash, and those of us who do make the effort to watch a subtitled or 'older' film film shouldn't have to suffer endless, tacky Yank rubbish that just sh!ts all over the originals and makes a complete mockery of them (I think "The Departed" - based upon the HK film "Infernal Affairs" - is probably the one exception to the rule, mind you, that's probably becausse it has a REAL film-maker making it and not a talentless HACK!!!!). Christ, you even do it with your *own* horror films - "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", "Dawn of the Dead" and "The Amityville Horror" being three such examples...

I'm just waiting for somebody to totally ruin "[Rec]", "The Orphanage" or "Battle Royale" to be honest.....

...Or maybe even "Don't Look Now"??

To utilise American phraseology (just to make it simple for you) - REMAKES SUCK!!!!!

reply

I can't stand the American remakes either, so I don't watch them. No one is forcing you to "suffer" through any movie... except yourself.

reply

You make me laugh AT you. Nothing you said matters to anyone.

The reason an American remake isn't that good is because the original is garbage.

I think the original films are bad to begin with. Japanese horror is a snore. In a culture that bought us the Samurai you'd expect to see bucket loads of blood, but no, it's a little black and white girl who moves weirdly. Or it's ghostly images in photo's.

Japanese horror is about vengeful spirits. It's saying people who wrong others will be punished in a supernatural way. Fair enough, if that's what they like fine, but the way they do it is completely boring. That emotionless, cold stilted way they make the movies finds it's way into the remakes.

The original Japanese material is what I don't like about the remakes.

reply

That's just like...your opinion though. Everything you said you don't like is why I do like Japanese horror.

Try Ichi the Killer or Tokyo Gore Police, but keep in mind that the gore is pretty exaggerated and not realistic at all.

reply

You fail to realise the original Japanese movies are crap. Every American remake is at least watchable because they're in English. The thing is the worst part of any of these remakes is the weak source material of the original Japanese movie. They're boring movies. Oh look another vengeful ghost, whooooo didn't see that coming.

reply

Don't you know that everything is supposed to be a community decision? We're asymptotically approaching our communist utopia.

reply

If you don't think they're that bad, then I seriously question your taste in film.

reply

"thinks their opinion are better than others" nowhere did OP state that. He/she just wrote "plz no more remakes" which is his/her opinion. And I bloody *beep* agree. These *beep* remakes, not just of asian horror but of scandinavian dramas and french neorealism too, are so bad that it is a plague for the filmscape. If you like them have fun, but holy *beep* I find it a waste of time and every bloody list of films out there include the remakes which makes it almost impossible to just find the originals.... This film made me cringe of embarrasement for remakes all over....

reply

it... cant be stopped :( we must suffer... PLEASE DONT TOUCH BATTLE ROYAL

For me it's more the volume of remakes... Especially in the Horror genre.. It just seems like every second or third horror film produced these days is a remake of some other *older* US horror film, or a Japanese, Thai, HK horror... "The Departed" is gangster film, you dont see nearly as many remakes of Gangster or Cop films as you do Horror films at the moment... Not to mention the fact that "The Departed" was done by Scorcese, a man who really *does* know the Gangster/Crime genre.. But how many other people of the talent of Scorcese are doing remakes...? To be fair, Alexandre Aja made a pretty good fist of "Hills Have Eyes" (which is genuinely gritty and gruesome at times. The Aja-less sequel, however, SUCKED DOG DICK...), but this is mainly because Aja did the rather superb "Haute Tension" and therefore knew perfectly well the dynamics of a horror film.. If you could get a director of the calibre of Aja to do ALL the horror remakes.....LOL

But surely, the sheer amount of remakes cannot be good for either the horror genre, or indeed, film-making in general... What's gonna happen in 20-odd years time, will we get remakes of the remakes...? The mind boggles....

reply

ohhh nooo
i dreamt battle royal american version
with nicolas cage and tom hanks!!!!

wake me up freddy!

reply

sorry .. they already are .. WHICH SUCKS!! Battle Royale should be left alone .. although i would like to watch the movie instead of reading it .. in an interview with some producer he said he was ging to have the kids 'coming out of the juvie and getting taken straight to the island' .. WHY?! .. why spoil it??

if its going to be remade, remake it in Japanese, or just copy the japanese script, change the japanese names to english ones and keep the same storyilne, everything wil be peachy!!

"Are You Sure That What You Brought Back Is 100% Pure Sammy?"

reply

Unfortunately I have heard somewhere that they ARE re-making Battle Royale. I am right there with ya though, it'll be utter, utter toss and an insult to the original, mainly because I heard they were gonna be turning the story into something like, using kids from Juvenile prison. Of course, actual kids won't be used, they'll do the typical 20 something acting 15...

reply

Unfortunately, they ARE touching Battle Royale.
Ain't life a bxtch?

reply

too late mate.. Condemned. Stone cold and Vinnie Jones are in it. Kind of a good movie.

reply

The Condemned wasn't a remake of Battle Royale.

reply

I hate it when they do this. They messed with ju-on, and made the grudge which was horrible, One missed call was boring and just plain stupid, they changed too much, but really, america should just stop making remakes period, every movie they do just sucks more with each try, i mean look they are even messing with the chinese movies i.e the eye, grr when will it end!! ill take the foreign movies over american ones any day ^_^

reply

OMG I AM IN! STOP THE BAD REMAKES!

reply

This has to stop with EVERY asian movie they want to remake. I am still trying to overcome the idea that "A Tale of Two Sisters" is gonna be remade...

reply

[deleted]

IF someone try to remake A Tale of Two Sisters I'll kill the bunny.... :@

Come on..... Foreign movies MUST charge millions for the rights of their movies.. that way American producers will be carefull of what they will doing...

reply

[deleted]

I watched coming in knowing this wouldnt be that good...I saw the original and I loved it...this one was poorly written and the plot was garbage...a cop would never just let some college student come with her to investigate anything and then the cop gets killed and right when the lead is about to be murdered by the girl, her mom "conviently" comes in and rescues her...a horrible flick imho

They're remaking Battle Royale.

*Signs with great vigor*

Hollywood's idea of "LETS MAEK MOAR EXPLOSHUNS!!!! DAT MAEKS GUD MOVEY!!!" is going to be the death of every classic they remake.

The only one that actually turned out good was "The Ring". Probably due to a thing called "competence".

reply

Definately stop the remakes.
I would also like Japan to stop making Ringualikes now its getting a bit tedious. How many times do we need to see characters black hair, pale faces and eyeliner, whilst we are on the subject My Chemical Romance should stop making records too!!

"mmm,mmm,mmm.....DINNER IS IN THE OVEN!!!"

reply

where can I sign? this crapola needs to stop. I like the foreign films better. I'd like to see the remake of Chakushin Ari, but I prefer the originals

The one I'm really hope they don't remake is Ichi, I can just see them casting keanu reeves as Kakihara and tom cruise as ichi and samuel L. mother *beep* jackson as Jijii, naturally directed by quentin tarantino

Concentrate on reading subtitles :)
hahaha wont even start with that.

reply

YOU DONT UNDERSTAND!

ok the argument is: people believe in remakes - why? Because they're gullable and innocent and think; well, it's trying to reach an audience that wouldn't normally see this kind of thing, then if they like it, maybe they will research back and find where that concept came from and watch the original - a film that tehyw ould'nt have heard of otherwise. Brilliant!
BUT, the annoying thing is, the kind of people that go and watch this Sh*t will never do that, they would have seen the original already and the true fans would not need to test their curious minds by watching a remake, they'd just wince and cringe when they see the advert.

Here's a metaphor; I dont like football, it's like an american company glitzing football up, changing all the rules, the players, the kit, the ball! and then trying to get me to somehow relate to it. I still dont like football. You get me?
Not only that but think of how many enraged football fans you would utterly destroy in the process of trying to appeal to the rest of ignorant *beep* America by altering a long tradition. Get a brain, get some culture and dont stick up for something you dont believe in.

I'll sign the petition.

reply

i will sign as well.

i am a Asian horror movie otaku. i love them all and i hate, absolutely hate the remakes. Now the ring was good and it got me into Asian horror cinema so it is fine. I liked the grudge until i bought Ju-On which i find a hundred times scarier and better. i will not, will not in my life see one missed call the american version. now i have not seen the full japanese version but i do own One Missed Call 2 and it is my favorite movie. the way i know i will hate it is just by the trailer. they used the wrong ringtone! they used the ringtone from the tv series, which is mostly just a mystery show, instead of the ringtone from the movies. the ringtone is what makes the movies so scary. Also with Shutter i will not be seeing it but i may see Battle Royale just to see how much they screwed it up and to laugh at the film makers.

To all of you who tell us to stop bitching, how would you feel if your favorite american movie was remade into a crappy asian movie, or a crappy european movie, or a crappy where ever movie and people hailed it as best. yeah you wouldn't like it either. so guess what. we get to bitch until hollywood stops being idiotic and leaves asian cinema alone.

reply

How about instead of asking for remakes to be stopped, you embrace the idea that even the bad remakes could introduce more people to the real Asian horror genera. Instead of saying something like.... "American remakes got me into asian horror but these remakes need to stop"

reply

I will sign as well.

I'm tired of hollyowod "Americanizing" good movies. Try writing something creative for once rather than stealing others ideas. They play these remakes for a dumb audience. They take away all the scares. Put pretty faces for you to focus on rather than the story. They change characters and plot points. Explain parts of the movie which never needed an explanation. (sigh).

Someone needs to be shot for trying to remake a Takashi Miike movie.

I watched many foreign horror films before partaking in the horrible experience of seeing one of these remakes. Since(without a doubt in my mind) the best horror films are foreign made. No american director has the creative mind or(i dare say) balls to make a movie as horrific or as good as their predecessors. So they settle for dumbing down a movie that they wish they had made.

reply

manta12 your an idiot !

What you say is just what the studios wants you to say. You know why they remake all those movies? Because THEY KNOW those movies are better than any crap they can do, and THEY KNOW that if the general public (like the losers unable to grab foreign movies)start watching those movies, they won't ever come back to being that DEPENDENT of Hollywood.

They are just CONTROLLING the distribution system. And they are picky because they are moneymakers. So yeah! If you are stupid enough to let those pricks pushing their crappy movies on the public, I am gonna take the liberty to push at least a small little OPINION.

DEATH TO ALL THOSE REMAKES ! DEATH TO DISTRIBUTION BOUNDARIES !
If you whine about subtitles it just tells us what kind of cinephile likes those remakes... Thanks for proving our point!

reply

Given your horrible grammar, I can't say I'm surprised that reading isn't your strong suit.

reply

actually....i didnt think the original one missed call was that good....i havent seen the remake yet.

and its also kinda funny how we think all these japanese movies are that good....id want to know what an actuall japanese person thought about all the [original] movies that are being remade...if you get my thinking...

They dont care one way or the other.
Of course that is not speaking for all, but every Japanese person i have spoke to on the subject (who reside in Japan) has no hang ups over it.

".... Now i have become death, the destroyer of worlds" - Robert Oppenheimer

reply

I wouldn't mind, if they weren't making so many of them. I went to the cinema today, and before the film I saw where the trailers for eye, one missed call and shutter. It's not just asian films that are being over remade, now classic american horror is getting remade, as well as a fair few sci fi classics.

If there not remakes, there adaptaions of some kind book/game - it's so hard to find a truley origional film these days.

BLEEDER!

reply

i get annoyed by these remakes but im not sure if they should be stopped. remakes such as the ring and the grudge have lead to wider interest in the original titles and has ploughed so much money in to the japanese film industry. imitation is of course the biggest form of flattery. and someone mentioned seven samurai; magnificent seven ring any bells for you!?

also the departed, i felt was a really good remake of infernal affairs because it took the premise but did not imitate it shot for shot like GVS's psycho remake, one of the biggest travesties ever! it does need to stop at some point though as films such as oldboy, JSA and audition could get totally lost in translation. if you dont like it, dont watch it.

I'll be back!
