Amazing film!

I saw "Off the Black" at the Woodstock Film Festival, and I thought it was wonderful. Nick Nolte and the kid who acts opposite him are both great, and for a movie that deals with some serious issues, I was surprised how funny it is. The entire theater was laughing loudly through most of the film. I hope it does well. I'll go see it again in the theater.

I was there too! I also saw it again this past weekend. It's even better the second time.

BTW that's Trevor Morgan. Watch for him.

The movie was boring. Nothing happened. There are too many movies like this. Movies like this do have a place, but in much smaller numbers.

Hollywood, wave your magic wand and bring back some quality, please?

reply

This has nothing to do with Hollywood. This was not a Hollywood movie. It was an independent film, shot on a very small budget by a group of passionate filmmakers. Anyone used to going to the multiplex to see James Bond will definitely be thrown off by it.

I am interested in cerebral movies made by erudite people (such movies are as rare as leprechauns). This movies, and James Bond, are not cerebral movies. They are vacuous; they are shallow.

Although (allow me to appear to contradict myself) James Bond movies, despite the fact they are aimed at a less than discernable audience, actually contain hidden messages hinting at certain profound truisms of the world (and it's control grid). I will say no more on it here, but for those interested in seeking an understanding of what I am alluding to, should google 'Michael Tsarion'. Listen to some of his radio interviews (available from his blogspot page).

I do not visit multiplexes, and I resent what you are insinuating. Hollywood receives no money from me (this movie is Hollywood; it is pretentious to state otherwise), and it never shall. I have not been to a cinema in more years than I care to add up, and I will never visit such places again. This movie is not profound; it does not contain exalted teachings and it has little to offer.

If you are really interested in profundity in your movies, then I recommend you look somewhere else.

Your attempts to appear learned and intelligent are rendered moot when your initial statement is: "this is boring. Nothing happened."

reply

Ratiocinator, I'm curious, where did you see the movie? It doesn't come out in movie theaters for a week. Do you have a DVD of it?

reply

This movie has been playing at a variety of festivals for the past few weeks now. It's not that hard to catch.

reply

I didn't think it was boring, it's about people, and plenty happened to them.

reply

Nick Nolte made this film. He is still an amazing actor, other than him I thought the other actors were good too.

Overall 7.5/10

Regarding "BORING",this movie allows and requires the mind to think and the heart to feel. We seem to have a generation of "watchers" who can't do those things during a movie. Really sad. An adult person viewing this film and calling it boring is pretty childish and must require constant explosions and chase scenes to escape boredom.

reply

A bit unfair to say that it's a "generation". I think it's the human condition to be a "watcher". But I agree with what you're saying.

Off the Black is character driven, not plot driven. James Bond is completely different in that it is plot driven. Things like the mother that weren't tied up neatly were left that way as a reason--you don't really NEED to know more. You are supposed to make your own inferences.

If you look at the main characters, they did go through their own journeys. Dave has reached adulthood--at the beginning of the movie he is TPing Ray's house; at the end he is challenging his own father to be a man. Ray has gone from a lonely, bitter old man to someone finally at peace with his own lot, and that's why he can die--Dave is like his legacy.

This movie requires a lot more thought for satisfaction than a James Bond movie, even if James Bond movies DO hint at greater truth about the world, because this movie hints at greater truth about the human condition.

A very nice summation of the film which made me reflect on the journeys undertaken by the protagonists. I was left wanting to know more at the end of the movie, like what happened to David's mother, but I suppose that is a sign that it is an involving film with relatable characters and situations.
