Terrible film
From the synopsis you are lead to believe that the film is a baseball drama with a bond forming between a high school pitcher and an umpire. Yet, there is barely baseball shown in this film at all. In fact, you only see the pitcher throw one pitch to open the movie. I am a huge fan of Nick Nolte and despite the lack of baseball I still tried to keep an open mind while watching. But the movie moves at such a SLOW pace. It literally felt like I was watching paint dry.
The character development was also terrible. Take the single mother for example. She is introduced as someone who has ties to Ray (Nolte). Yet it is never explained how she knows him or what her relationship is to him. Then you have moments where it comes off like she is sexually interested in Dave (Trevor Morgan) who is 17. Also, Timothy Hutton who is usually a fantastic actor, gave a completely lackluster performance in this movie. He seemed like he was half dead and didn't have more than 10 lines over the course of the whole movie.
Overall it was just an extremely boring film with terrible character development and little to no baseball in it.
